*VERY OPINIONATED COMMENT*

I have a huge problem with this film. I honestly prefer the book *much more* than this. It's too rushed, I think the characters were portrayed badly by some actors, or just the actors didn't fit in with the character. I'm not saying the actors are crappy, I'm saying their roles weren't fitted in right. The scenes were also rushed and the film seemed pretty dull at parts.

Starting off with Charlie.. Good grief, how much I hated how badly he was portrayed. In the book, Charlie was cheeky, troublemaker, good sense of humour, caring, etc. Here, we get a whole different Charlie. He seems more different, very mature. The way I pictured Charlie was different too when he grew up, that he had messy hair etc and was taller than Tommo. This ruined Charlie's personality which was confidence. He never really joked about in the film like in the book..

Tommo - I think the actor fitted the character well. It was exactly as I pictured him. His personality was not much different and was portrayed like in the books. He actually is my favourite character out of all. Not much to say about this.

Big Joe - Okay, why couldn't they add in more scenes with Big Joe? Like the Harvest Mouse funeral, him getting lost, etc. We really didn't meet Joe's flaws and characteristics, and he just became the backstage character which no one really cares for. Referring to the books, Joe was adorable and sweet, cared for everyone and everything. He loved animals, life, and people for who they were. He didn't understand a lot of things but that's what made him the character he was. I hate how there weren't a lot of scenes with him, he's another character which I like.

Molly - She was okay, and I actually pictured her the same way when she was a grown up. Again, she didn't get much development like other characters. She played her part well, but why didn't they add in the Scarlet Fever she had? It would've showed more deep feelings how much Tommo and Charlie care for her that they pray. Again, another character which didn't get much screen time.

Grandma Wolf - Right, I think she didn't really fulfil being a very nasty and judgemental character. Like the part where she treats Joe like a baby, wiping his mouth and feeding him food. We could've had more detail about her, but what we got was how she was always glued to the Colonel, flirting etc. We never really got to meet her personality more deeply and she never got a development in the film.

Colonel - CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHERE THE BERTHA SHOOTING SCENE WENT? BECAUSE I'M STARTING TO THINK IT JUST FLEW OUT OF THE WINDOW! Colonel was shown NO DEVELOPMENT whatsoever like he did in the books. Like the part when he sent out people looking for Joe, showed had much he had developed in the books - this just pains me, when such parts of a film are just missed out. WHY, did they ruin Colonel, such a well developed character, just WHY.

Mother - Once again, a character which we never really got to meet. In the books, as I like to refer, she appeared as very sweet, caring, loving and joyous character. I actually did picture her as brunette with blue eyes, and pale skin, but I'm fine with this version. Mother was also a character which understood Joe the most, and had a special bond with him, yet this film lacked of showing this.

I could go on about the characters, but these are the main ones. The scenes were deleted; mostly the important ones, and were very rushed. Honestly, this is what happens sometimes when a brilliant book is turned into....this.... And before you say how wrong I am about *sharing my opinion*, think mature and share your own opinion and instead of debating, discuss it. ~

A feature film version of Private Peaceful was released in October 2012. Directed by Pat O'Connor with a screenplay by Simon Reade, it stars George Mackay as Teenage Tommo and Samuel Bottomley as young Tommo. The music score was to be written by Mark Knopfler in his second film score in a decade, but Rachel Portman has been hired to do a new score.

I loved the book to bits, but to know that they made a movie out of it made me beyond ecstatic!

But the ending...many tears were shed. T^T
