Javascript in the future?

Feels like there's something new that we're scared of every week in tech. From Superconductors to AI to...space? Is javascript and web dev even worth learning still? Yes. Obviously. Let's talk about why.

S/O Mir for the awesome edit 🙏

I get what you are saying but pls don't use the Battlefield UI nowadays as an example. It is simply not good, sluggish, weird behaviour etc. It's notorious in the community.

DICE using React in game menus is better than using Adobe AIR like RIOT used to

Hearing that React is being used in games is a massive black pill. Every time AAA gaming looks like its going to get off of its knees it falls even lower.

If you are into superconductors pivot to JavaScript

Integrating something like React into a game for non-gamey parts is actually really smart. As for if JS getting left behind? No. My employer still likes Perl for personal projects and uses it still today. As long as new versions keep coming out with accommodations for newer tech and security patches, these languages will retain their loyal user base. Until said language just does not have the feature set required, they will continue to be used. It's like Jerry Seinfeld said - "it's not like switching toothpastes."

"That's why they're not using React for Tesla" *shows footage of the Tesla mobile app which runs React Native*

You don't need react in games, the performance in game engines is good enough to literally just redraw the entire GUI every frame. it's waaaay easier, less error prone, and more flexible.

a hugo corp embedding webview in their game to use your favourite technology to save money is not a good flex

We are in the wrong timeline where JS became the language of the web

Nope, it's way easier to build a good UI in a open-source engine like Godot than with JS. Look up Alfred Baudisch's Godello for example.
Also, using an EA game as an example(specially Battlefield?)... is really not the point you want to make.

LK-99 is a ferromagnetic, it was just moving because of magnetic torque, sorry Theo. 😿

Sorry, I am not with you on this one. There are definitely places where using these technologies makes sense. Like in Tauri, which already embeds a webview and actially uses it to a great benefit. But overall React has so high requirements for just a few menus, that you should not embed it everywhere you need some UI. This is exactly how we end up with 100GB games with ludicrous system requirements.

Hopefully Javascript gets replaced by better technology for web applications

PWAs will become the defacto normal app installs and support will grow on appstores (if the app isn't performance hungry like games). With the rise of GC and webassembly it will matter much less which language as you'll be able to use almost any language to code on web/mobile and wearables. The future for native development will be on wearables and imbedded programming with IOT. Deno and Bun will become the new javascript runtimes, its just a matter of time now.

Superconductors are a real thing, just like every new, groundbreaking, disrupting technology that dies after few days, when tech twitter gets bored by it.
