PAGASA, since the operationalization of its WRF model in 2010, unfortunately has not benefitted from a data assimilation system. In recent years, the bureau has improved its observation network with the installation and upgrade of radars and automatic weather stations around the Philippines, increasing temporal and spatial resolution of observed data. Since these observations provide better characterization of the initial atmospheric conditions and the pre-storm environment, assimilation of the said data has huge potential to improve the quality of the model forecasts and consequently the products and services that PAGASA offers to its stakeholders and the general public.
