Sailboat Keel Types: 10 Most Common Keels Explained

If you want to watch one video on keel types and just get it, this one is for you. Keels don't have to be confusing; simply classify them the right way. I've made clear diagrams for each type.

There's a simple way to explain sailboat keel types, and I think I figured out how. We'll go over full keels (long keel), modified full keels, fin keels, bulb & wing keels, bilge keels, centerboards, daggerboards, leeboards, and canting keels. We'll discuss each keel's properties and function, as well as advantages and disadvantages.

TIMESTAMPS:
0:00 Introduction
1:27 Six most common keel types (overview)
2:34 What does a keel do? - Keel functions explained
5:25 Full keels
6:06 Modified full keels
6:34 Fin keels
7:30 The difference between skeg and spade rudders
8:04 Bulb keels
8:33 Wing keels
9:11 Bilge keels
10:01 Lifting keels (centerboards and daggerboards)
10:57 Leeboards
11:42 Canting keels

I'm so glad my full keel days are done. Once you sail a fin it's hard to go back. At a certain point the enjoyment comes from sailing fast and well.

Cheer~~~the longitudinal structure along the centerline at the bottom of a vessel's hull, on which the rest of the hull is built, in some vessels extended downward as a blade or ridge to increase stability.(I got good a piece of information and like the concept)😊

As a potential cruiser, my preference would be a full keel heavy displacement of moderate length of less than 36'. I would like a bow which will lift the bow from heavy seas but in the case of less than 6'waves cut through then verses pound and rise. Hobby horsing can be minimal with proper stern shape so I have been told. I would like a high initial stability then give way to a final stability to harden up into a less than 15° list. Does such a shape exist?

Nice, I am looking at making a small(14ft) boat with bilge/daggerboards. I think this design will give good performance, while not taking a lot of space inside the boat.

canting keels appear to need dagger boards or so it seems from mini 6.5's

Thank you! What kind of Keel would be on the MacGregor 26 Sailboat? I am trying to decide on what Boat to buy as a Novice. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, God Bless

Least wind resistance is the function of the keeling. The keeling should match the rigging. And always deeper in the bow..

The current Brit entry to the Cup race, , NZ *back paddock arena* might have been well served to watch your superb video...*at the time of design. Anslie"s shock crew,
and well manned helm just perhaps not enough to overcome a keel refinement to flattened, reduce to "bustle" as foil un-steamlined instance as best choice to build.
And my limitations (many) are the sole opinion of a land locked armchair deck too old and fat to partake. But one look at your excellent models, begin to describe the mastery of sail, now a feature of a riding moment above wave height.
Why so powerful, still? Because the next generation of sail, and the dreamers who want to join the "aulde cup" race...a lot I cheer for every gain insight into full command of that design bit that meets ocean. A bit of time...that knowledge in the making. ...I quite thank you for the interesting review and post. M.

I would never sail a non-integrated keel.

We would say uncomfortable, not discomfortable. English is often very obnoxious; take it from native speakers.
