In the past: "We don't want big brother spying on us 24/7."
Today: "Hey, Big Brother, how do I make pancakes?"

When I was a boy I used to dream of all the cool technology that we would one day have. As I grew up, I saw that most of the technology I was excited about as a kid was being used to spy on us and convince us to buy more crap we don't need. We were all being trained to be good little consumers.

I still remember going out to lunch with my game development team right after the I-Phone came out and everyone who got one was looking at their phone instead of talking to one another. We used to all look at each other and talk to one another and suddenly half of the group was looking at their phones the whole time. It was an eye-opener for me.

For all the supposed benefits we are gaining I would argue we're taking more steps back. I'm glad you posted the list because sometimes we all need a mirror held up to see what it is we are buying vs what we're actually getting. Our Consumer market has trained us to buy cheaply made crap that has a pretty fasçade. Everything is built to be obsolete in two years so we will be convinced to buy the next random piece of crap they want to sell us. More and more I want to simplify and only buy stuff that will last. These days when I look at tech videos it is to find well made tech that has been built with privacy in mind and can be used for a long time.

Thanks again for the video.

It pays off to have been born in a 3rd world country. I have non of this stuff in my house, even though my job is all about it. Those ring doorbells are a nightmare for us. Call backs are off the roof.

I absolutely despise gaming <insert device here>. The problem is that most decent to high end hardware is only available in gAmInG variants. I just want to buy a decent laptop without paying extra for rgb, especially when I would probably never run a game on the laptop

Nothing worse than buying an expensive GPU with faulty drivers.

0 out of 5. Whenever I am about to buy something, I ask myself: do I really really need this? Often the answer is, hell no! More people should do that IMO.

My razer laptop hinge broke recently. Huge regret, never buying ever razer product again. Switched to a thinkpad and never looked back

I'm going to cite one exception to that list: a proper gaming keyboard. Back when I started using computers, I swore by BTC keyboards - you may remember them, heavy duty keyboard that you could drive a tank over and it'd still work. Hey it was even N-key back then. Then those keyboards dissapeared and got replaced by all kinds of expensive crappy plastic. But I did finally come across one keyboard that's almost as good: Corsair Ksomething. Way too expensive for what it is but finally my fingers feel at home. Thankfully I haven't succumbed to any of the other crap on your list and i've been a heavy critic of voice assistants from the day I heard they exist.

Yea, I'm with you on Ring. I have the hardwired $500 unit and it disconnects just as much. On input devices I've tried wireless keyboards and mice with dongles or Bluetooth for my desktop but always go back to the wired decades old versions I got free with desktops I bought who knows when. They never disconnect (something that happens always at the worst possible moment), never need batteries, they ALWAYS work. Take them apart every couple of years, clean the membrane, dust them off, and back to work. And I have a whole stash of them.

Funny that I bought a Fire TV 4k Stick for my mom (who's in her 80s) and it's been brilliant for her. The Fire tablet I bought for her a few years back however, lasted about 13 months and completely died. She's had an iPad ever since, hardly any issues. I bought a FireTV back in 2015 and it was good for a while, but became so overwhelmed with software that it slowed to a total crawl so I set it back to factory default, and it's once again functional, but unnecessary in my home now. Clearly experiences differ.

Don't forget the power balance wristband... They said it was tech. Everyone was in on this one for some crazy reason...

> Gaming mice and keyboard
Sadly, they're one of the FEW that actually have left-handed mice. I am currently using a steel series mouse and that one is ambidextrous though. And Keyboard: where can I get a non-gaming keyboard that has some functionality in todays age? I am actually curious.

Any thoughts on the open source voice assistant Mycroft?

I disagree with the first one tbh. Since you have your privacy breached by your smartphones anyway. Having echo/google assistant won't make much of a difference
