What is going on between orbital launch mount and Highway 4?

There won’t be any flame diverters on Mars or the Moon. Starship MUST handle the flying debris.

The heat shield tiles almost certainly weren’t damaged by shrapnel on SN8 as it’s on the top side and most shrapnel would be blasted up and away from the body of the starship once it gets out from under the skirt

I count this as a "successful failure" for starship.
The debris didn't breach the bulkhead: win
The starship as a whole survived a preburner meltdown: win

I have a theory why they don’t want to use a flame diverter! Perhaps they want to nail out the problems for starship launch structures so when they launch from mars they don’t have to solve it when their ships are so far away.

If this channel continues growing so quickly you will have a full-scale functioning starship as a background prop for your videos!

I absolutely love WAI’s uploads. So much great information.

Felix, you rock.

*shows video of Vega rocket spinning uncontrollably*
“Do not try at home”
Well what the hell am I supposed to do with my multi-million dollar orbital launch vehicle then?

I’ve been worrying about the test platform and especially the orbital platform for a while because of the sheer power coming out of the Starship and then Super Heavy. Last week’s test showed what kind of damage 3 raptors can do the pad, and in turn, the Starship itself. I’m no rocket scientist but it seems like having only 30 to 50 feet of space between your vehicle and the ground is asking for more problems.

it was at this moment that knew, all those years of engineering studies' agony were leading to something amazing!

We WANT stuff to go wrong in testing. This is a GOOD THING. It allows for this kind of thing to be engineered out here on Earth rather than finding a problem 32 million miles away.

Here on Earth they can upgrade the pad as much as they want - but how they can solve this on Mars seems to be the real issue.

Vega engineering interview: So you want to work here. What was your last job and why did you leave?

Applicant: I worked at Boeing. They fired me

Puzzling, a large part of a flame diverter is actually for sonic diversion to prevent reflected sonic energy from bouncing off the ground and damaging the rocket. It's also why the water flood systems are used. Sonic damping primarily for the rockets protection then the additional benefit of cooling the launch pad to prevent thermal damage to it.
So Elon and his engineers think they've found a way around a problem that vexed early rocket pioneers in multiple countries who ALL settled on diverters and water flooding for larger rockets.
Looking forward to seeing what they do as they've been good at thinking outside the box.

I bet those satellite owners now wish they had placed them on a Falcon 9.

You get a big thumbs up for stretching out to other news than only SpaceX, YOU rock! ^^

But seriously, often there was other interesting news in the space industrie and you just let them slip. Hope you keep that up.SpaceX rocks, but even Elon wants other company to succed and make a great future for spaceflight .

This is all so exciting, eagerly waiting in New Zealand for starships first flight.
