If you learn English with British pronunciation, many words that would be homophones in American English are actually distinguished from one another. "Do" and "Due", for instance, would not be homophones when uttered by most English people. "Mary", "merry" and "marry" are also only homophones in American English-- but feature somewhat distinct vowel sounds in British English, which differentiates them. "Ladder" and" Latter" are yet more examples of American homophones. It's down to preference, of course, but I do find British English speech to include less ambiguity as a result. This is coming from a Canadian native English speaker, by the way. Our so called "flap T" can create some homophonic ambiguity at times. In my native dialect, if I say "He's hurting the goats" and "He's herding the goats", the two sentences sound identical-- whereas that problem doesn't arise if you use British pronunciation.
