Use short concrete posts in the ground and then bolt on the wooden posts and therefore the wooden posts will last a lot longer and you can enjoy the view of the wooden posts compared to the ugly concrete posts. Concrete gravel board are a must to ensure the bottom of the panels do not rot through.

those titan breakers are brilliant if you're not doing groundwork all the time, plenty of grunt and saves loads of time for jobs like that. plus with them being relatively low cost makes the deal even sweeter

I never use wooden posts, largest fence run I did was 100 metres all featheredge and rail on concrete post + a gate and a Field gate for a client, on my own I might add, it was in the most difficulty place and I used a hi-lift jack or logging jack to get the old concrete out, I had an eye bolt to attach to the concrete then used a chain and D shackles to attach the Hi-lift, best £40 I ever spent came in handy for removing concrete posts too.

I always used Postcrete, I got mine on tradesman discount at Wickes. Love the groundwork in this video, If you replace the post holer get one from Toolstation, they have glass fibre handles. You've also just reminded me to sell off the 2 stroke post auger.

You can get bitumen sleeves you put over the posts where the soil is in contact with the post above the concrete. Use a heat gun or torch to melt the tar and secure the sleeve on. Helps stop it snapping at ground level where they always rot. 👍

I'd like a bickie too! ( the shot 4m 20s in is a classic, but suspect 😂)
Kudos to "Skill Builder" for showing tradesmen doing repairs in ordinary situations and not new builds with expensive tools.
Love this channels content and more power to ye all.

I agree with Sam on the post mix, it is very expensive and won't go very far if you have dug holes at least 450mm deep.

I guess because the other posts were wood then homeowner wanted to keep wooden posts - so glad I did my fence with concrete posts and gravel boards

Use a line top and bottom of the fence means that you only have to plumb it left and right. Saves some messing around

He's honest at the end saying that he gives it between 10-12 years and to always use concrete gravel board and posts if possible, because of their longevity.

Concrete posts or at least concrete spurs are the way to go. My expensive solid oak posts only lasted 10 years !

Why not a wooden gravel board and next shorter panel? £6 pound for postmix compared to the time it takes to do a mix - postmix all the way

The posts will last many times longer if you treat them with Cuprinol before setting them in concrete.

Ah, the joys and perils of the ubiquitous panel, i haven't messed with one for well over 40 years now, always something a post and rail construction.

Do you not mix the ballast and cement with water? Great advice to use that mix by the way.

Everyone saying use concrete posts... They said, it's part of a longer fence, so makes sense to match. Also, it's a boundary so the neighbour might be awkward if it's shared - ours was and wanted wooden posts, we wanted concrete as they'd outlast her, we ended up fitting wooden posts but with concrete spurs on our side - so from her side it looks like it did before with wooden posts, but we don't have to replace it in 6 years - everyone's happy.
