The Future of Travel: A Tour Guide's Perspective

If there’s one thing we’ve learned throughout the COVID-19 crisis, it’s that there’s so much more to travel than just seeing new places. At its core, travel is about the people we meet, the connections we forge, and the experiences we come away with. Not only does travel have the power to transform us on a personal level, but — when done responsibly — travel also has the power to make for a better world.

Nobody knows this more than the people who are at the heart and soul of the touring industry, from tour guides to porters, homestay hosts and so many more. These tourism professionals know the positive impact travel can have on local communities — and that’s why we’re sharing their unique stories.

William Mirano, a Cusco local who’s been working in the tourism industry for 15 years, is sharing his experience with us today. As a tour leader for Intrepid Travel, William typically spends his time guiding groups of travellers throughout his home country of Peru; however, his daily life has changed dramatically due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite all the challenges, William talks about how the pandemic has taught him to be a better person, and reminded him to focus more on the things that matter most: his family and community. Another positive to come out of this situation? The natural world is thriving around cities like Lima and along the coastlines of Peru. As William so eloquently says in the video: “On one hand, COVID-19 is affecting economies around the world, but on the other hand, Pachamama (Mother Earth) is coming back to life.”

Lastly, William touches on responsible travel, and why it will be so important for the tourism industry going forward. In the future, he believes travellers need to actively choose companies that value sustainable practices, support local initiatives, and operate in a way that will preserve the planet for generations to come.
