Wrong. Nobody gets this right. This is not a realistic basketball. Look at a real one and you will see that one "end" of the ball is "rotated" 90° from the other. All panels of a real basketball are the same. In this representation, the panels are different. You need to ensure that 1. The points at which the ellipses cross the outer diameter of the ball cross at exactly 45°. 2. The resultant pattern must then be copied and rotated 90°. 3. When they are extruded, leave the 2D pattern in the center of the sphere. 4. Extrude 1 pattern + 75. Extrude the other one -75. Cut the sphere with both the + and - extrusions, and you will have a "real" basketball.
Note that the outer points of the 2D patterns must overlap EXACTLY when rotated 45°. If they don't, then your ellipses aren't in the right place. Re the 2D pattern - It's easier if you trim all intersections and do a Join command on them before you rotate the initial 2D pattern, then rotate a copy 90°. When you go to extrude them, you can just click on each joined pattern. Far easier than trying to grab all the various bits and extrude them together.
