We seem to be going through an unprecedented wave of tech layoffs in the past 2 years, which is leading many of us to wonder…is coding even worth it anymore?

So I wanted to jump in and offer my perspective on what’s happening because i think a lot of this just comes down to simple economics.

Remember, getting a tech job is not the only way to make money with coding so if one way is getting harder many others are whide open

Back in the early 2000's all the big tech companies were hiring people who they thought would be their competition . It's a hell of a lot cheaper to have the young software engineer at your company for 300K a year than to buy out his company at 5 billion dollars. But now so many people code and most of them are average at best that they don't really bring value to the company they work for . For example all those women who made a day in the life working at a tech company. Those women told on themselves showing that they barely did any work the whole day and mainly just hung out, having a 5 hour lunch break.

It’s definitely affecting new developers. I feel bad for any person just breaking into this industry with little experience. It must be hell.

On the other hand, generalists who do app and server and devops and data analysis will be ok since they are very versatile.

You can always use your learnt skills, freelance or personal projects.
So coding is worth learning, but so is making money so you won't starve.

Coding should be learned because you like coding. If you don't get a paid job playing a guitar, will you not learn it or play it ever. So is learning coding worth it? Yes. Because you love creating.

I have worked for a few different software companies over the last 40+ years. Coding and support jobs are going to India and China now. These people work for a fraction of what we are paid. Only management and customer facing jobs are staying here. I know a number of coders who are working contract assignments because those are the only jobs available.

Companies have realized all they have to do is require that there workers actually do there job. That way they can fire 3 out of 5 people. Its simple math. Your paid what your worth you are what you eat. Dont worry im sure your worth every penny.
