Crunchyroll is Worse than you Think

I'm sure this will be a very non-controversial and well-received video about everyone's favorite anime streaming service.

I also recorded this back in like February and never got around to editing it, oops.

the irony of cruncyroll used to being a pirate group themselves who went legit, and now they wanna do the exact thing they used to stand against

Crunchyroll choosing to remove features rather than fixing or adding tells me everything I need to know.

It's hilarious how competition between piracy streaming sites forced them them to make their service better leaving the official option in the dust.

Yeah I cancelled after they removed comments and went back to the high seas. I was surprised that the quality is better, streams work more reliably, and fan subs are better for a number of shows that dubsub… why pay for Crunchyroll?

Crunchyroll has gutted Right Stuf. It would have been the simplest thing to just rebrand and let it continue as-is, but now orders from Right Stuf have scaled back protective packaging and deliver *collectable* merchandise in sub-par condition. They refuse returns since disks play, despite dented, scratched, torn, and scuffed boxes.

They also nixed comments on episodes. So many anime fans upset about that one. Was a huge part of the anime community.

When piracy sites actually compete with each other and try to offer a better experience to users than the legitimate businesses though.

The enshitification of industries is a direct result of government not enforcing monopoly laws

You brought up the lack of good engineers and a huge reason is because in 2017/2018(?) CR did mass layoffs and fired their one of their key engineers. Along with a shitty product they also have shitty business practices. They pay their translators next to nothing while demanding fast turn-around. They refuse to employee union voice actors and the average salary for a CR employee is around 40k with the requirement that they live in the Bay Area. One of the most expensive locations in the country. They’d rather spend their money on making their bathrooms look cool instead of paying their employees and talent a living wage I guess 🙃

HiDive is the only remaining anime centric streaming service that isn't a part of the Sony Monopoly like Crunchyroll. Hopefully HiDive will start catching up with Crunchyroll and become a serious competitor against Crunchyroll in the anime industry.

When I tell you how much I hate Crunchyroll. I was a simple Funimation fan. I prefer English dub, and I don't want wait week to week for episodes. If it's a new anime, I just wait a year or two later to watch the entire season. But it was going to be ok, because all Funimation's dubs were going to be brought over, right? If I pay for the ad-free option it will be a better experience, right? Oh, a year later and we are still missing anime? You mean I can't skip intros? You mean this anime only has 2 seasons and not 15? You mean I can watch it in Portuguese and Telugu, but not in English? Crunchyroll's UI also kills me. It's not bright like Funimation, its too crowded, Crunchyroll on my Roku TV doesn't let you filter for dubs, and for the love of Gawd Crunchyroll please add a filter to remove harem anime! And it might be just me, but why don't subtitles pop up when words are shown in the anime, like text messages or letters? Even when I put on subtitles, it doesn't work for me. When you read the details of the anime, why can't I increase the font size? Crunchyroll could at least finish their anime, God of High School.

I still ain't over the flash player that would get stuck repeating ads. Much better to just pirate anime and buy any merch or whatever you want.

The streaming nightmare proved that sometimes it is not a service problem, it is a system problem. The way licenses work is the issue. Why are they fully exclusive deals rather than how supermarkets work where brands can sell themselves to multiple publishers? Of course, people won't compete with themselves, so for example disney content would stay on disney+, but what is the point in scattering the offerings to the wind?

If anything, they could easily make timed exclusivity deals like how some newer videogames stay on only one plattform for a year or two and everyone else willing to engage with it gets a release later.

I hoisted my black flag and cancelled my Crunchyroll membership when they cut the comments. I'd rather sail the e seas. I'd been debating it for years since they keep raising prices....but that was it. I speak Japanese so I don't need the subs anyways. The comments section was all that it was offering to me.... they took that after jacking the price up again.

I still collect dvds to this day, the most recent anime I bought was Spy x Family, After I saw the Crunchyroll logo and I was like “How can they fuck this up?”

24:29 We've definitely regressed as far as TV shows go. It used to be you paid a cable package, got all the channels and could watch any show, but they aired in predefined slots and you had ads. DVRing solved the problem of air times as you could record the show and watch whenever, but people were still annoyed by ads. So netflix came along and said hey, for 10 usd a month you can watch everything, whenver you want with no ads. Now 15 years later we have countless streaming services, each with their own subscription, and they reintroduced ads. So the only thing that's argually better now than before is that it's on demand (which DVRs solved anyway decades ago). As for the consumer experience and pricing it's way worse than in the cable era, at least you could easily switch channels on the tv with a remote instead of needing 500 different apps and accounts.

The best example of good monopolies is : steam (and trains) . As with steam they have a good doctrine of "piracy is rampant, if we make it far easier to buy it legitimately than pirate we win" .
