Isn’t the stern planer like flat lining with a giant bobber? I’m not seeing the advantage. If i let out 40 feet of line then clip on the stern planer and then let out 60 feet I’m 100 feet back just flat lining. The spoon isn’t any deeper than without the stern planer.

Why wouldn't you use a side planer (even if it only goes slightly to the side) instead of the stern planer? Wouldn't you want more room in the back to handle fish and give your corner baits some breathing room incase of a snag or hookup?
