The AMAZING Licensed Cars of PlayStation's The Getaway

The Getaway was an ambitious PlayStation 2 Grand Theft Auto clone from the Sony-backed Team Soho development team.

Although it had many flaws – including clunky shooting mechanics – The Getaway stood out from the open-world crowd thanks to its wide array of licenced cars. It included everything from Vauxhall Vectras to Citroen Saxos, making it an authentic driving experience for any British motorist.

The game also featured a realistic partial re-creation of London, displaying iconic buildings and monuments like Buckingham Palace and the London Eye in all their glory, pitched within a Guy Ritchie-inspired plot and its cast of stereotypical cockney gangsters.

More than twenty years on from its release, we examine the unique way The Getaway implemented licenced cars into its game world, and how its eclectic vehicle roster will probably never be seen again outside of the modding scene.

Ahh the nostalgia, i loved this game back in the days, was 12 years old at the time when i first played it, that would be definitely one of the top 5 games on my list for a remake

Licensing sucks, cos whilst its true that manufacturers don't want their brand image "tarnished" by splatting peds, the flip side is that when it comes to movies, they fall hand over fist to be the chosen one in a car chase or criminal enterprise film.

In any case, the Getaway, despite its dodgy controls was a god tier game. And I can't really explain why I enjoyed it so much

The only mistake of the video was calling this game a GTA clone

What the general public might not know is when an entertainment entity enters into a licensing agreement with a manufacturer... There are a myriad of stipulations the film/TV/game producer has to abide by, or the manufacturer can just say no. Some of these restrictions include no extensive damage modeling, no depictions of the brand being used in illegal activity even in a fictional setting, other car brands have to be portrayed as being worse even if they aren't IRL, etc. This is why games like GTA don't even bother with licensing vs. more car focused, open world games like Forza Horizon, The Crew, etc. where a lot of brands pay the developers to have cars featured because those types of games are virtual showcases even with all the restrictions.

What I would do for this to be remade these days.
Or a game set in set again in london (or at least the UK) similar but based in the 70s.

I wouldn’t call this a gta clone. This game was authentic. It really got me interested in Great Britain, and London. Their lifestyle, slang, etc. was unknown to me for the most part until I played this game. The storyline was INCREDIBLE!

I might also add that "Wheelman" also had a few licensed cars. While some elements, like hitting pedestrians, were censored, other elements were surprisingly destructive, including the ability to shoot and blow up vehicles!

Not just cars but even in streets you could find burger king and McDonald's, mark and spencer, Fedex trucks etc...

Definitely not a clone. It’s it’s own animal. Pure Mustard

Brendan McNamara actually got another shot at a GTA-like with licenced cars in the form of L.A. Noire though concerns about licences were mitigated by the fact that you play as a police officer and that the cars are either long-discontinued models which don't seem to present that much of a concern for them marques or that the brands are long since defunct.

Oh, just remembered that Mercenaries had a licensed Hummer, but that one makes slightly more sense considering its military association

this is an idea for content i've always had and never got to doing that i'm happy traxion is finally getting to: non-racing games with driving mechanics

Getaway’s always been a fascinating game. I only with the controls weren’t so junk. And the free roam not being to cobbled together.

What I liked most about this game is you live in London you knew how to get every where in the game without the map…when I first played the game I hardly done missions because I wanted to see if the game had the city done properly and it actually does just some things missing

4:01 you can either unlock free roam or you just do the first mission once you done the warehouse you can free roam between most missions you
just ignore the indicators flashing all the time but yes should of just let you stray and fail the mission or give you freeroam from the start
