Drivers who showed up at Singapore's new information centre on Malaysia's Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) have been left disappointed. Many were turned away without having their queries addressed. The centre at Woodlands Industrial Park was set up to help them ahead of the 1 Oct deadline, when foreign vehicles entering Malaysia from Singapore by land have to be fitted with radio frequency identification tags. Claudia Lim reports.

Many drivers won't make it by 1 Oct. But it is due to the ineptness of the Malaysian authorities, who seem they couldn't care less.

I applied VEP through portal in 2021, it supposed to send me email of approval. I waited till Jun 2024 there was no response. I re-entered the website, updated and uploaded new docs as instructed accordingly, the website just gave error message that I already applied before, asked me to seek VEP technical assistance. I went to JB Danga office in early July 2024 at 9am. There was already a huge crowd of Singaporeans waiting under the hot sun. Got a queue number, waited till almost 5pm before the number was called. Checked with the counter that they claimed that can't help, need to transfer the case to their technical department and asked me to go home to wait for email. ONE whole day wasted in JB. I came back, got an email from VEP following week, and immediately provided my details as requested. After that I had wrote in again in early Aug 2024 to enquire. There was no response till to date. Give up ! No need to drive in to Malaysia !

M'sia knows and not going to do anything. Historically, they like to taunt, poke, laugh at Singapore if there is any opportunities. I was in JB immigration leaving M'sia, long queue at all counters, without a warning, an officer just closed his counter, leaving Singaporean stunned in the queue. I can see the smirk in his face, but Singaporean just quietly dispersed into other queue. The signal is clear from them, we like your money but never like you to come.

Amazing idea to set up a counter without being ready and not informing the public on its location. Why make things so difficult for Singapore cars ? Thailand cars don’t matter at alll? 🤣🤣

My main concern is that if the tag is installed outside the car, it might be easily damaged by others.

10 working days in malaysia = 1 working day in singapore.

100 working days in Indonesia = 1 working day in singapore

It seems like Singaporeans are not welcome on Malaysian side. Don’t waste your time going to 186 Woodsland industrial Park E5, as the staff there can’t do anything to help and will just advise you to write in and wait for the reply. I wrote in to Malaysia authority soon after the day Transport Minister Anthony Loke mentioned that one can email them if facing any problem during the application and the authority will reply within days. To date, I have yet to receive their reply. Is real frustrating.

Dateline are drawing near and issues still not resolved. As all these are concerning Sporean and Spore vehicles, I feel that our Transport Minister should step in and work closely with his counterpart across the causeway to see what can be improve or expedite, for a win win situation.

As usual la. Don't expect you can get your applications processed at that office.

yah always like that wan, instead of rolling it out in slowly thoughtfully but always try to do BIG BANG with no adequate supporting infrastructure in place or never catered for it, in the end delay or postphone.

Typical Malaysian government department SOP.

VEP was announced in 2017, all foreign-registered vehicles must apply, the scheme has been in force since 2019. In July 2024, Anthony Loke give deadline by Oct. No VEP No Entry, then all of a sudden a mad long rush by Sporeans, as usual 'tidak apa" last minute attitude.

VEP is not new. It was introduced about 7 years ago. However, there was no issue getting the tag fitted then as they were fitted by professionals.
Currently, whether you choose to collect the tag from JPJ's contractor (one contractor, TCSens Sdn Bhd) or to have it delivered, the vehicle owner has to install the tag himself, take a picture and submit to the contractor. If the picture is rejected, the vehicle owner is asked to request for a replacement tag which cost just as much as the first tag which is more than RM50.
Calling the hotline means waiting a long time before getting to speak with a human. . Writing to aduanvep means waiting for months for a reply if there is a reply at all.
If the relevant authorities cannot solve the multitude of problems, then it is advisable to delay its implementation and change the SOP. It is alright as the entry toll is still collected with or without VEP tag.

Why change something when it is not broken? I just checked on the way of application of this VEP, it is just too tedious and too many procedures. The Malaysian Transport Minister need to make it simpler. Anyway, this people are still not ready in helping the Singapore registered cars in installing the VEP. This should have been done 6 months ago. An office should have been opened in Singapore and drivers can drive over to get things done.

The VEPAMS website is really lousy. After updating my particulars in the JPJ website, since my previous RFID is expiring in June 2024, the JPJ website later directed me to the VEPAMS website to upload my documents like passport details, IC and LTA log etc . There is nothing there for upload and got stuck. This is the state of affairs for Malaysian system. If they implement their software properly then there won't be so many Singaporeans struggling to their physical location to get help.
