Wood Badge is the Highest Level of Adult Scout Leader Training

♫“Back to Gilwell O’Happy Land… I’m Going to work my Ticket if I can.”♫ Wood Badge is the highest level of adult Scout leader training available in the World. The first Wood Badge training was organized by Francis "Skipper" Gidney and lectured by Robert Baden-Powell and others at Gilwell Park in the UK in September of 1919. The first course in America was held at Schiff Scout Reservation in 1948. Scouters wanting to take the course must be fully position trained with current YPT. All levels of Scouts BSA are encouraged to take this high-level training. Wood Badge is set up as a 6-day course. One full week or two full weekends of training. After completing the course members of Troop 1 start working their “ticket” to complete the training. On completion, the Scouter is awarded the Gilwell Wood beads, neckerchief, and woggle. Warning, this is high-level training. I have seen it change people's point of view of the world. Your critter and patrol members will become a special part of your scouting life.

⚠ For additional information about Wood Badge, please contact your local council service center.

And if you get a chance to serve on staff after getting your beads, do it at least once! Serving as a staff member was an additional valuable learning experience, as I had months to read through the course syllabus; and seeing how courses happen, and how the course concepts fit together, my knowledge deepened and I was able to appreciate things that didn't stick when I first took the course. Being a participant can feel like drinking out of a firehose sometimes, but everyone who wants to learn a lot from the course, will. If you've completed your basic training, and you have the PTO and money to do it, don't hesitate. Take the course with an open mind and put your heart into your ticket. A good ticket will stretch you and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish. (If money is an obstacle, check with your council to see if they have adult leader training grants, or check with your unit committee to see if they will sponsor your course fee.)

My son and I are still pretty new to scouting, but right away, I knew I wanted to get involved more. I have been an assistant den leader for a while now, when I heard about Wood Badge, I knew I had to sigh up. This video makes me even more excited!

Great Job on this video, We are in New Zealand and our Woodbadge training held residential over a weekend. 7am -10pm for 3 days. Long days but what an experience. Come joining the world biggest Scout troop, 1st Gillewell Troop at the completion of the course is just as special as the receiving your Gillwell woggle and beads. Amazing course for adults!!! Dear Stan (the man)!
My brother (as are all scouts)

I just picked up on your channel today, and I've been ploughing through your vids most of the day.
I instantly knew, I wanted to leave you a comment, but I didn't quite know where...
Well, here I am commenting!
I completed my Wodd badge training in 2016 and yes: It was life changing!
I know, Wood badge isn't the same all over the world, but it holds its common ground, and boy: Do I recognize all those common aspects in your vid!
I also have taken on atributes from my patrols namesake animal - in fact - I would say, it has become my totem animal! Please note, that in my neck of the world, we only use animals found on Brownsea Island. I'm an Owl - and my patrol was formed by the oldest (maybe wisest?) participants, so it made sense from the get go! As I understand it, there is a hierarcy amongst patrols in the US, but that's not the case here.
I love how you bring joy and happieness to all your vids!

Kindest regards from Denmark

My husband was an Owl (deceased 2017) and I am an Eagle. This really frustrated my son who was working on his Eagle requirements. Our family was very busy that summer when I was doing my ticket and my son was doing his Eagle project while also working at summer camp. As I write this I don't know how we made it through all this, living in khaki and green the whole summer. It would not have happened without my husband keeping everything on his calendar. You can't be involved in Scouting at this level without a calendar.

I told BSA wood badge was deemphasized the critters in wood badge program. Could you take a minute and explain if this is true and what was the motions for this shift.

If I don’t have kids and looking for scouting for adults, is this a good route? I’m also in Orlando!

Interesting how you go on and on about this program, but don't really explain what is involved. Just saying it is "life changing" repeatedly doesn't really help.
