China and Russia have never really been friends. They are sometimes friends of convenience. They are both about their own expansion. China is only waiting for Russia to become weak enough for China to take what they want. What they want are the natural resources contained in Russia's far eastern territories.

"I believe that China will need more land in the future, and the only place it will get it from is Russia".
My superiors laughed at me and told me I was too young to understand.
I also stated that we would have armed police on the streets in the future.
My superiors told me that it would never happen - again, I was too young to understand.

When I was at university, I had a professor who spent much of the cultural revolution in China. There was one point he kept coming back to. He stated that always when he spoke to Chinese leaders, they spoke of Siberia in terms of, when they take it back! Not if, but when, ! The door may be open now!

I remember loggers from Oregon going to Russia to work with Russians partly to teach modern logging methods, then coming back disgusted when all the small logging companies were taken over by Putin's oligarchs. Some even back then said Putin was handing the region to China because the oligarchs didn't care about modernizing.

Brit here. Interestingly, I put this to some Russians about 20 years ago, pointing out how vulnerable Russia was because of its reliance on railways East-West. Put the most important river-crossing bridges out of commission with precision missiles, and eastern Russia would be paralysed. They were 'not amused'. Whether Putin is 'terrified' is another matter. I doubt it.

Putin is not as strategic as he likes to think he is. He knows that Nato countries were not going to suddenly invade. It was pretty foolish to use up all his resources taking the Ukraine. China might keep part of Siberia once russia is low on weapons and troops.
