The Profitable Business of Bottled Water

💡 A bottled water costs at least 2000 times more than the water coming out from your tap at home. If you went through your day using only bottled water instead of ordinary water, your monthly water bill could easily climb up to $9,000. Yes - bottled water is outrageously expensive.

For developed countries like the Untied States with access to clean water, it makes little sense why this simple product can even be sold for that much. Yet, the demand is there and it’s everywhere. We always bring one to our lunches. We also bring it to every business meeting, football game; it’s in the vending machines at our gyms; it’s in our cubicles at work. Bottled water has become an irreplaceable prob in our lives and culture.

Just 60 years ago, selling bottled water was not even an established business, but it has transformed into one of the most profitable industries in the world over the years. Some analysts estimated that the global bottled water market is expected to reach $500 billion by 2028, surpassing the soda industry.

So, how do bottling companies manage to capitalize something so simple and make it profitable? And why are we willing to pay for bottled water when we have cheaper water at home? Let’s find out.

Yesterday I sold a guy a tall boy beer, it costs $2.48. He realized he needed water so he grabbed one. The bottle water was $3.98. Both 12 ounces. $1.50 more than beer! When a necessity for life is outrageously expensive and sold as a commodity we are in dire trouble!! Water shouldn't be owned by anyone as WATER IS LIFE.

Many places in "developed" (global west) countries have shit tap water. Take any Native American rez or Flint Michigan for example. And in places where it's better, it's still got chlorine, fluoride, and other harmful and unnecessary chemicals, many of which are not present in bottled water. I'm not defending bottled water, in fact I don't think I've ever bought bottled water in my life. That is both a privilege of good tap water and a disadvantage of being poor. Nonetheless, bottled water can literally save lives, but we need to require these companies to be held accountable for their ecological crimes of drying up natural water sources and of creating plastic pollution. If they were required to invest the $, we could have safe bottled water in biodegradable plant-based "plastic" bottles.
My final and most important thought, buy a filter for your tap.
