In this video I talk about academic tenure and what it means to get academic tenure at a major research university in the United States.

This video is meant for undergraduate and graduate students that are thinking of becoming a professor, and for others that are going through the tenure process.

This is based on my own experience of getting tenure at a research university. as such, the information might vary between universities, but the general feel of the process is similar across universities around the world.

I discuss what academic tenure is, the process of getting academic tenure, and why you should be honored and privileged to get tenure. I also discuss that getting tenure is a responsibility to keep doing the thing that you were doing as a PhD. Finally, I discussed that getting tenure depends on many different people that are voting on you to keep your research trajectory.

This apply to academic tenure job as university scientists or researchers. Scientists are just an extension of government employees. You work for your boss, the government. Government decides if they want you as a scientist or not. You can get a PhD, publish some papers and did some postdoctoral work, at the end, it is still the government's decision to make you an assistant professor and nurture your research and academic career, all the way to an emeritus professor. This is why, scientist is a very risky profession unlike a medical doctor. A medical doctor or a dentist can setup his or her own practice. A scientist cannot do so, a scientist have to depend on government grants. Which is why university scientists or professors are also known as professional "Beggars, Scammers, Bullshitters and Thieves". As long as the government have the will and the money to throw away, the government can choose any Tom, Dick, Henry, Frank, Susan and Lucy to become an assistant professor.

Ok, so basically it's a teacher evaluation. It's just been given a whole lot of pomp and circumstance. Honestly, to me, you just made the case for why tenure and that entire process should be done away with.
