Just to simplify air embolism is essentially an RV outflow tract blockage just like a classic massive PE. This in turn drastically decreases LV preload and cardiac output which is the cause of the resultant shock and cardiovascular collapse. Now, of course, hypoxemia and hypercarbia also affect pulmonary vasculature resistance and PA pressure but acutely it is the RV outflow tract obstruction that causes acute cardiovascular collapse, and shock.
