*upcasting for more damage*: I sleep
*upcasting for extra targets*: REAL SHIT

Some upcasts: 🤡 "uhh, you can deal 1d6 more damage."

Other upcasts: 🗿"if upcast you can target 7 more creatures. Also you manifest a cool hat for the duration."

I was playing a tortle in a pirate themed campaign once. I decided I would go into my shell and have my friend load me into one of the ships big cannons and shoot me onto the enemy ship. It ended up working and I found their explosive storage, lit the room one fire, ran up onto the deck, jumped off board, and swam fast enough away to not get blown up. It was quite fun, and a highlight of that short lived campaign

My highlight of naval battle was when i used invert gravity and made the entire enemy ship fall to the sky and then back to the depths of the ocean again

Well 9 out of 10 times upcasting is only good if the upcast effect is increasing the number of targets or if it's on a sustained spell because using higher spell slot to deal 3 extra dmg on a fireball isn't really worth it

Upcast potential is one of the things I look for when choosing spells.

Multi-target command can be very useful in a pinch

Damn I'll keep that in mind when my party goes up against a group of mages 💫😈✨

Never upcast for damage. They only add one die per level. Upcast for more targets to your effects.

You don't have to ever remind me that in paralysis melee is a crit

I almost failed a 1v4 against some drowners as a bard

Some people have mentioned updating can be a bit overstated when it comes to damage spells, as sometimes you only end up adding a couple of points of damage - Melf's Minute Meteors is a good exception to this.
The base spell creates six meteors which orbit you. As a bonus action, you can shoot up to two meteors up to 120 feet away, where they cause 2d6 fire damage each in a 5 feet radius of their impact. When upcast, the spell creates two additional meteors per spell level. That's an extra 4d6 damage per spell slot, which is a pretty good return on investment.

The two best reasons to upcast: more targets, and spells which last longer than 1 round like Spiritual Guardians, since the extra die is applied on every target, every turn, so it adds up faster.

I use upcast hold person as the universal "This dude is going to ROCK your shit." Signal to my party.

The upcast more target effects for control spells can be pretty wild compared to most others. Not many spells have such amazing scaling.

Me, a level 15 warlock with magic items that allow me to upcast even further and I’ve used hold person plenty of times before: it’s a lot more fun being caster that’s targeting others rather than being the target.

Command is one of my favourite spells to update especially fiend warlock forcing 2-3 people to drop to their knees and end their turn in a word is very fun

I've been jonesing to play both D&D and Monkey Island, and wondered if a MI-D&D game was doable. Then I saw the news about the Sea of Thieves crossover with MI. THEN someone called MONKEYdm makes a PIRATE D&D video... It's all been in 3 days. Why did I get this sign from heaven when I don't have time for a game!?

On DnDShort’s latest video I made a comment about a Swarmkeeper ranger in one of my games who was a pirate. Her swarm effects manifested as either her pet parrot, who could distract/redirect enemies or peck at them; or her pirate crew, which was always just off screen when she needed help, and would run in to stab or push enemies around. It was a hilarious way to interpret a “swarm” which never felt like it was stretching the mechanical bounds of the class.
