Live edge walnut waterfall table Part 1/5: Making the top from rough lumber

In this first video in this series I begin by milling up some live edge slab walnut cut with a chainsaw mill. As the slabs weren’t wide enough for the table, I carefully prepare and join two pieces so that they appear to be one wide slab. I join the two pieces of this slab with Dominos and it will become the top and the two waterfall sides with the grain continuing from the top down. I finish this episode cutting the sides from the top.

You ripped the original into two halves so you could plane them and them you glued them back together. My question is, is it always necessary to plain or flatten a live edge slab before turning it into the top of a piece of furniture?
