Nice video and introduction to the Sydney Metro system. You succinctly and comprehensively explained its history... nicely done! It's also worth noting that a section of the initial phase of the line utilised track previously served by Sydney Trains (from Epping to Chatswood)

It would be my dream to try Australia's first automated Metro system. It looks way better than US standards BY FAR.

Amazing video! This is my local system, so I have a few more interesting mentions. Rather then regional rail, Sydney Trains is what we call in Australia 'Suburban Rail' It is the standard in australia and is the style of system used in every major Australian City. Sydney's regional rail system is called the Intercity network, run by nsw trainlink instead of sydney trains, the same operator's as all the diesel lines down to Canberra, Brisbane and Melbourne. Originally, the section of the metro between Epping and Chatswood was built in the 2000s to serve Sydney Trains, however the steep gradients and tight turns meant it was slow and inneficient. This lead to the proposal to turn it into Sydney Metro, in combination with a new section of line to the hills district. This opened in 2019 and is called Sydney Metro Northwest. It uses 1500v dc electrification, the same as sydney trains and our electric intercity lines. This is why the new-built sydney metro city uses 1500v dc instead of the newer more effecient 25kv ac (being used on Sydney Metro West and Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport, both brand new lines under construction that are not using any existing lines). The M1 City and Northwest is also being extended to Bankstown along the ancient Sydney Trains Line, now under conversion. This difference does mean that the lines cannot be linked in future and that rolling stock has to be different (not that big of a deal but not ideal either) Overall Sydney Metro is just about the greatest project in Sydney in the last 50 years, and i am excited to see it keep growing!

I'm from Melbourne and I would love to visit the Sydney Metro soon. If you can you'll have to visit Melbourne's Metro Tunnel when it opens!

That's great, and the massive, unobstructed vertical and non-vaulted volumes permitted in underground stations by Sydney's sandstone ground are really fantastic.
In pretty much all cities where the ground is softer or waterlogged, they'd need buttresses everywhere to maintain these large vertical open volumes in non-vaulted stations.
They really took great advantage of the much more favorable soil conditions to create stunning unobstructed volumes in underground stations.

Now they just need to fine-tune the line's autopilot system to remove the little delays to open the doors after arriving in stations, before departing when the doors are closed, etc.

Nice one. Glad your brother enjoyed riding the Sydney Metro as much as I did! (Although it looks like he missed out on exploring some of the stations, which are marvels themselves)

I must say this is very delightful video. Iam a Sydneysider and I’m really enjoying somebody from outside our bubble giving this a good review.

I noticed the doors closing and opening alarm sounds are identical to the Hong Kong MTR

A beautiful video about a beautiful line! Great job, Bear! The Sydney Metro joins a growing fleet of driverless metro systems, including the PATCO Speedline, and the shuttle between Grand Central and Times Square. Should I count most of the elevator systems in the world? Probably not, although the platform doors in the stations did remind me of elevators.😉
