Nanorobotics & Nanotechnology | Big Changes in Small Science Explained

Nanorobotics is the technology of creating machines or robots at or close to the scale of a nanometer - 1 billionth of a meter. More specifically, nanorobotics refers to the still largely theoretical nanotechnology engineering discipline of designing and building nanorobots.

These aren't the fictional nanobots of Iron Man or Rick and Morty. A nanorobot, or nanobot, is a popular term for molecules engineered with a unique property that enables them to be programmed to carry out a specific task within the human body. Medical nanotechnology is a reality and being actively researched and developed.

Structural DNA nanotechnology, known as DNA origami, has emerged as a versatile approach to fabricate nanodevices, nanomaterials and nanoparticles with complex nanoscale geometry, functionalities, and programmed mechanical and dynamic properties.

Nanorobotics can also revolutionize industry. Nano metamaterials are much stronger than steel -- and much lighter. They can be used for environmental clean up of the Earth's air and water, more efficiently than ever before.

Nanotechnology can also allow us to connect our brains directly to the internet. This is something the futurist Ray Kurzweil predicted would occur by 2030. Are you ready to wire your brain into the cloud?

With new technologies, comes new dangers. Nanotech innovation is world-changing and should be encouraged. But, we also have to acknowledge the risks.

Let's find out why.

As a diabetic I’m cracking up here I know this is an old video but another great one you the man!

When I was in highschool I wrote a short story about a nano robot experiment gone wrong. They were designed to go in and heal damaged organs without surgery. But the ai decided it's nanobot colony could do a better job than the organs themselves. So they replaced the guys blood and systematically began replacing all his organs until he was just a sack of skin filled with metallic nano goo. The only thing left was his skin, brain stem and a few pieces of brain that controlled memories. Most of his memories and personality were copied over to the nanobot colony for safe storage. Since I was in highschool it ended up more of a super hero story because the guy ended up faster stronger and smarter. And the nano colony could produce weapons directly from his body. A big focus though was that despite having super human abilities he lived in an existential hell of knowing he wasn't human anymore. His entire self was just a copy of who he used to be. A robot wearing a human skin suit. And they scientists couldn't reverse the process. He had become the nano colony. So he was already technically dead but forced to live forever as little more than a stolen personality being used by the immortal nano colony so that it can pretend to be human.

Please give us an updated version of this video. I'm certain that this tech has grown in a major way with the advancement of machine learning within the past two years

I absolutely love how you break things down simple like. Not all of us have phd' s so you make learning fun for the rest of us.

My father is a Nanotech scientist and few years ago he told my mom that he and his team have had done something that they couldn't even understand. Thing spread everywhere etc etc

Sometimes you have to stop and ask "should we" instead of "can we"

Doctor: We've got good news and bad news. You no longer have cancer. The nanobots took care of it.
Patient: Well what's the bad news?!
Doctor: You've got nanobots. We've been calling it "nancer" around the water cooler.

Great episode as usual. I absolutely loved Hecklefish’s antics in this one. Also, this European-friendly upload time is definitely appreciated here

Connecting my brain to the internet? Incredibly awesome and cool in concept, horribly terrifying in reality. It's hard enough to keep websites from selling your data to advertisers. Imagine websites selling your thoughts for that sweet sweet ad money!

It’s incredible to think we could have only gotten these 10 min shorts instead of the full documentary’s we get every week. We are blessed as an audience. Still love these ones though!!

This epi makes me think of an old Micheal Crichton novel - ‘Prey’ - in which nanotechnology married to biotech goes horrifically awry. Loved that book!
