En pointe in 6 weeks? Impossible. And a little traumatic for @JosephineLee .

DISCLAIMER: Do not go en pointe after 6 weeks of ballet training. Please be advised by a professional dance instrutor, physical therapist or dance specialist before attempting. In other words, please don't get hurt!! Stay safe, dancers!

Hi friends! At 00:07 we do include a disclaimer that Josephine was only shown the 'pointe shoe part' of Michelle's video (she did not watch the whole thing since it's a half hour). We are aware that Michelle did not do a full performance en pointe, and that overall, her experience was relatively safe. But for the sake of those who don't know anything about ballet, we just want to be super clear that going en pointe after 6 weeks is not safe.
Thanks for watching, and enjoy!

You should do a fitting with her and let her go up on point again. So she can maybe experience a less painful moment on point 🙈

I love it when Josephine goes "Aww so pretty" when she watches the professional ballerina dancing. Such a precious moment.

omg this is the exact same energy as costumers' reactions to actresses complaining about how much corsets hurt lol. like yeah it should feel different from what you're used to, maybe a little uncomfortable at first, but if it's properly fitted it shouldn't be painful!

BEFORE YOU GUYS COME FOR ME, Michelle has toe pads on AND her shoes were semi broken in. Obviously how I broke her pair in would be different from how myself as a professional ballerina. And these were stock shoes that were sent for this video so unfortunately they did not fit correctly.
And this was done just for a quick clip for her challenge. Please don't hate, it took a lot of confidence for Michelle to try this challenge! <3

Next time, stop at the Pointe Shop for a fitting! <3

this is a great example of how not every pro dancer is a pro teacher. those pointe shoes weren't broken in at all and she had no padding and they were clearly killing her metatarsals!! just so sad because i know what its like to be forced to dance in horrible shoes and it really does hurt more than a properly fitted shoe.

It's hilarious to see Josephine go from horror to admiration and back to horror.

She was very safe about the whole thing and really only tried the pointe shoes on for a short period of time and did not wear them for her performance at all. She even had a disclaimer about that in her video to make sure that people knew it's not safe to just put them on and dance without any proper training.

Having worked with beginner adult ballet students for 10+ years, I am not surprised she finds this extraordinarily painful in a way it would not be to someone who experienced a more traditional transition to pointe; especially after only 6 weeks. Young ballerinas don’t understand how much preparatory pain tolerance they have acquired simple by wearing ballet slippers. Practicing tendus and landing properly takes that acquired pain tolerance to a whole different level. We dancers are accustomed to feeling our toes squished together as well as feeling our weight upon surfaces of the foot other than sole or the pad of the toe. We don’t realize how painful a tendu derrière is to someone who lacks experience. Knowing that, I can imagine being on full pointe would be very intense. This is just one of the preliminary concepts that affect how dancers are able to work in pointe shoes.

I've never worn a pair of ballet shoes in my life, but as a frequent corset wearer this gave me flashbacks to all the times I've had to deal with misinformation about how painful and unhealthy they are. I sympathise with all of you ballerinas on a new level, now.

Why do they set people up for failure! It’s bad enough you’re putting a rookie on pointe, give them a shoe that fits. It’s got to be in the budget.

You should offer to do a proper fitting on her to see how different her experience would be!

Also her toenails may not be trimmed so she’s probably in hella pain at the teachers not showing her what’s right or wrong

Never tried ballet, but I can definitely vouch for the importance of a proper fitting by a trained footwear specialist before attempting something technical and strenuous. The first time I bought a pair of ice climbing boots, the young, inexperienced guy at the store put me in boots that were very high quality, but didn't fit my foot shape and were much too small. After a long day of climbing in them, I had bleeding blisters on my heels and permanent nerve damage in both my big toes. The next time I bought boots, I flew all the way to Seattle to get them properly fitted at a reputable shop, and my subsequent climbing experiences were 1000% better. No pain, no blisters, no nerve damage, just warmth, comfort and stability all day long. God bless shoe fitters!

I definitely think you should watch the whole thing. Not show it all here, but see how the experience was overall

I watched that video and I'm actually really disappointed to find that they didn't give her the proper sized pointe shoes. She's not really getting the experience then, is she? Not to mention she's being mislead that that level of pain of normal.

My first pair were really tight (I didn’t understand what the fitter was looking for when she asked me questions) so I was like “why is this so much more painful for me than the rest of the class?”
After my second pair (a totally different shoe) I figured out why

I saw her video about a year ago and i think about it everyday. I'm not on pointe yet and I've been training (inconsistently but since Feb i take ballet classes almost every day) for 7 years!

You have such a great sense of humor, and are so amazingly knowledgeable, that it is just a delight watching your videos. To share, I have performed with quite a few ballets, but thank God I was playing the violin! I have a tough enough time with ballroom dance, let alone ballet. So, even though I will likely never go on pointe (as I am a marathon runner, and I destroy my feet enough as it is), I watch your videos just because you are such a fun lady with an absolutely great personality. Lots of good wishes for all that you do.

When I tried on Gaynor Mindens (my first time ever in pointe shoes) I was surprised how much more comfortable they were than I expected. And they felt like they fit me just right. When I tried on a few others, like Principle, Freeds, and this other one, they were more uncomfortable, but that had to do with the fit.
