What follows the 5? The 4 of course! After just offering the Zoe for 10 years, Renault have properly stepped up a gear when it comes to their new range of electric cars. After the brilliant Megane hatchback, there was the family orientated Scenic, another brilliant offering. Then they turned the clock back with the sensational looking new 5, their offering in the B-segment supermini class. And now we have what is, arguably, the most important car of them all - the new Renault 4. Why is this the important one? Because the B-segment crossover market is huge in Europe, and so its this space that is bursting with new offerings, many of which are electric. So this has to be good. We sent Bryan off to Paris to get a first glimpse of what it has to offer.

AutoEV - all electric, all independent.

Excellent vid. This is just the sort of car I like. After a couple of years of depreciation, I might buy one.

Big difference between the 4 and the Jeep Avenger, the Fiat 600e and the Peugeot is that the 4 can tow 750kg. The EV3 small battery can only tow 300kg. The eC3 Aircross: 350kg. For many people, towing is not a consideration, but having a decent towing option in a smallish car is good to have.
A trip to the recycling centre or landfill, a small boat or camping trailer.
Price will be very important as well.
Great to see these smaller EVs coming out. Not everybody needs an SUV behemoth or the cost of replacing the monstrous tyres necessitated by a 2-tonne vehicle.

Good comprehensive review, as ever. Looking forward to you doing the road-test and real world consumption test.

Renault design team are smashing it. Why go for another boring design, when you can look back and reboot an old design. I do prefer the R5 and Twingo.

Brian, I loved you keep being in camera shot of Ginny from Electrifying, when I watched it this morning. On the car, in the segment it would either be this or the Elroq. On the whole looks okay.

I hope the steering wheel has up/down and In/out adjustment . Lack of this knocked the Zoe of my list in the past.👍

Finally an EV with decent bumpers..shame no 22 kW AC charging.

It is basically a box style design and looks more like a VW golf from the front. But look forward to seeing one

A lot of likeable options on this. I like the rear access, I looked at purchasing a Scenic but it lost out on rear access. The boot was so deep I had difficulty in seeing the bottom of it. Absolutely useless for my dogs, I have therefore opted for an Enyaq, which is due for delivery next month.
I remember the original Renault 4 well. Unusual insofar as it had an uneven front to rear wheelbase. French logic and practicality.

61cm load height?

That wipes the floor with anything in it's class.

I hope it catches on, at least we can claw back some of the usability of estate cars.

I like this a lot. Reminiscent of the Jeep Avenger but nothing to do with Stellantis.

The consumption, when driving at faster speeds, will be less than ideal with this one. That’s one thing to keep in mind because of the design of the back of the car, roomy but not aerodynamic. Like this car still very much. 👍🏻

Dog owners and their dogs are going to like that low boot lip. It feels one price bracket too high for what it is given the proximity to the Mégane.

Very clever design. It is quite difficult to successfully combine retro with modernity. Perhaps not the stand out design of the new R5 but more practical. It is interesting to see how Renault are using very much the same dashboards and components across their new model ranges which I guess is one of the reasons that their cars are competitively priced versa the opposition. I also like the colour choices Renault are offering to accentuate the link between the original and new models and bring a little more excitement into the colour palette which on so many cars these days is so drab and boring. I think the R4 successfully bridges the needs of both one and two car families. It is a second everyday run around for everyday town/city use - taking the kids to school, going to the supermarket etc - and a primary car for small families or couples with dogs and/or grandchildren to transport. It might also appeal to those (more impoverished) mummy’s who would like the street cred and unique style of a Range Rover Evoque but at a more affordable price. Renault are being very smart at designing their new models to create a little more aspirational appeal and differentiate themselves from the all too anonymous Euro/Japanese/Chinese boxes.

Nice car, retro design but why must wheelarches be squared theese days ? Wheels are circular, so it looks awkward, , , silly idea !

Don’t like this blue/green colour, but the two-tone black/reddish looks dantastic.
