Sephora's Q&A sections are filled with "is X product non-comedogenic?" and I always respond "this isn't a reliable term as everyone's skin is different so pls check the ingredients list for anything that's caused issues in the past". The biggest advice they never ever give is to find one that works for you, it bothers me that bc they will say it won’t cause acne or is best for everyone but it reality anything can cause a breakout due to reactions to your own skin, even the most raved sensitive skin product can still cause a reaction depending on your own skin and they never say that 🤦🏻‍♀️

Their viewers will pay $70 for foundations but not use their health insurance to go to 1 dermatologist appointment that will solve a ton of problems (insurance coverage for specialist appts varies but usually copays are something like $35-65). Not everyone has insurance but overall even the people who have it seem to resist actually going to a derm, they latch onto marketing claims so much when there’s a fairly accessible and qualified source of customized advice available.

As someone who works at Sephora, I base how well a foundation would work for someone with acne based the performance of the foundation and outside factors like travel, humidity, and client's preferences on finishes and coverage. Its really hard to tell if people will break out, but I ask clients about their experience with foundations during returns to help me with recommendations.

Honestly I noticed the biggest ‘always breaks me out’ ingredient is artificial scent. Love how I went to Sephora, and was told because it was rated for “Clean Beauty”. It’s totally not going to break out my skin, but it smelled sickeningly sweet of peaches….I honestly should have walked away but bought it anyways because I did want to try something new and the associate highly recommended it.
two days later my cystic acne was back, and I returned the foundation.
