This was attempted many years ago with running races, but the difference is that a running race requires constant muscle flexing, so there is no muscle rest after the initial burst. In skating, the gliding allows muscle relaxation in order to recoup energy. There is also some drafting to help out once she arrives at the back of the pack. Works so much better in skating 😀
