Surfline's Wave of the Winter event is a one-of-a-kind contest where the single-best wave of the entire season is awarded $25,000. This documentary highlights the 2012/2013 winter season on Oahu's fabled North Shore and is chock-full of every single mental wave that was ridden from November through February. There's also plenty of colorful insight from some of the world's best surfers.

Wow, who knew how beautiful and special each wave is. Pipe & Backdoor always have perfect barrels. It would be a dream to surf them!

Their focus was so much on it looking pretty, which I understand, but my favorites were the trashy barrels that dudes had to suffer through yet still ended up getting nearly 10 second barrel rides on.

Reading the comments & someone saying Gerry was jealous... I think Kalani chapman was jealous of Ricardo's wave saying his wave needed to be bigger! Bwahaha

Well, I am just speaking from my experience as a 30+ years wave rider, and after I made my drop, it was pretty much a matter of stalling or accelerating, but beyond that, there really isn't that much to it. Popping air or even a well-timed, makeable floater or Z cutback is more challenging. But, and I qualify here, I surfed some breaks in Mexico and at Pipe, making that drop isn't easy--the bottom drops out fast.

Some of those waves were being ridden by people who new what they were doing, some people were just so lucky to get those waves. Some people were hunting for the best wave like john john or kelly.

Like Lopez says at about 15:20, size and style are the most sought after characteristics. The footage of this past winter pales in comparison to some other winters. Many other winters were so epic. The riders (style) are terrific, but the waves were not really impressive (size).

Picture it. Going left (my backside), you drop in, gain speed--pumping--out pacing the breaking wave, then cut back to the breaking lip (carved or flash-slashing a 180--reversing direction), hit that lip and then turn back into the direction of the left-breaking wave. That was me going backside, but here is a video visual of it going right (search Youtube for this title): easy Surfing Tutorial: Backside Snap (goofy foot)HD. You'll then see the Z repeated and explained.
