As a 40 year old now who's still drug free and "edge" (I did puff a Cohiba cigar in Havana so i guess i broke edge:) ) I am not sure what I think about this song anymore. I know it's not literal but it evokes a very shortsighted approach drugs and drug use. As someone who is still drug free it is now crystal clear that drugs must be completely decriminalized and legalized for the same reason Prohibition was thrown out. The "War on Drugs" that the EC generation grew up in ended up incarcerating millions of mostly black and brown people, and created the largest prison population in the world. Drugs legal and illegal affect the working class and poor the most and we must commit ourselves to eradicating the problems that capitalism creates, not becoming part and parcel of the authoritarian law enforcement mentality of kicking the drug dealers asses to save the day.



I'm curious what people think. I love what the XXX and punk scene did for me as a kid. It kept me positive and drug free and introduced me to the world of radical politics. But as my worldview has changed I feel as if straight edge didn't evolve with the times.

While musically the song is a banger, the message is both productive and outdated.

Nobody is disagreeing that drugs aren't good for you. They aren't. However, our approach as a society to drugs and declaring a war on drugs is the wrong approach. We spend so many billions and billions of dollars a year on eradication and punitive measures that do not work. That billions and billions could go to rehabilitation and treatment facilities as well as addressing the social issues that are most likely to produce drug addicts. It's no coincidence that impoverished areas have many more times the rate of drug addiction than wealthy areas. Instead of spending billions of dollars on locking people up after they begin using or dealing drugs only for them to emerge a few years later and continue their drug habits, spend that money on social programs like subsidized higher education to give impoverished people some hope of better future and make them less likely to turn to drugs to deal with life's hardships.

This whole idea of staging a violent offensive against drug addicts and drug dealers is simplistic and ridiculous.
