TheCollegeFix: Students say rich people and taxpayers should pay their college tuition

Several Democratic presidential candidates are running on a platform that promises "free college," an idea that has been warmly received by many young Americans.

It seems that many college students don't want the responsibility to pay their own tuition bill.

Case-in-point: In interviews with students at Carleton College, a small, private liberal arts college in Northfield, Minnesota, they agreed college should be free.

When asked who should shoulder the expense, students offered up everyone from "taxpayers" to "the 1 percent" to "the government."

To the guy at 3:00 who says there are 12 free years of school.. Um no. We property owners pay for that, EVEN if we have no children, or homeschool. Homeschoolers get a double whammy because we have to buy our own curriculum (same usually that many private and/or faith-based schools use), and STILL have to pay school taxes in the property taxes. Homeschoolers don't get to claim those expenses on taxes, unlike teachers that do.

You buy them books, send them to college, teach them everything you know and what do they do? They tear off the covers and eat the pages.

If they want almost free tuition, then they should go to community college. Harvey Mudd encourages its students to take all their prerequisite courses at community colleges and they are one of the best engineering schools in the world.

I would love for these type of videos to ask the question when folks say "the rich or raise taxes" the following:
1) How many people do you think are enrolled in higher education colleges/etc)? (about 20M).
2) How much is the average annual cost of college? (public college in state-$25K, Out of state-$40K and private colleges are $50K). So extrapolating the costs, by the total enrolled, we get $800B (using a $40K average) each year. Almost a trillion.
3) Going to #2, if all the rich had to pay $800B each year, then what happens to health care? Democratic candidates say healthcare should be free. US Healthcare spending is up to $3.65T (Fortune Mag and CMS.gov). So if the wealthy are paying already $800B, and now have to pay $3.65T EACH YEAR, is that fair that while currently the top 5% pay about 40% of all taxes yearly, they should now pay an additional $4.4TRILLION each year to fund college students and give healthcare?
4) If they now pay $4.4T more, how do you think they will recoup money they are spending? Do you think they will lay off workers because they can't afford it, or raise prices on services and goods, or do you think they will just do nothing?
5) for those that want free tuition to current and future students, what about the ones that took out loans and paid them off? Do you think they should get refunded? If not, why not, since they had to pay loans just like you, and worked hard to be able to pay it off.
