Glen Bell is the creator of Taco Bell. He opened the first Taco Bell with his “original” taco recipe in 1962, but it turns out he didn’t invent his taco recipe. So, who did Glen Bell copy? Today, I’m uncovering the full story of how Glen Bell stole a taco recipe from a local Mexican restaurant and created one of the biggest fast-food chains in the world.

As a former Taco Bell employee, I have to dispute the number of Taco Bells that existed in 1978 (868). They are assigned store numbers according to when in line they were built. The first Taco Bell was store #1. I worked at the 11th Taco Bell in Stanton, Ca which was built in 1963. I also worked at store #1448 which was built in late 1977. They had 5000 restaurants by 1985.

The notorious West Side, When they built the 15 freeway (Now the 215) they put all of the off ramps and on ramps on the east side to steer business away from away from POC. When I left in 2013 they almost finished redoing those on and off ramps while building the finale segment of the 210 freeway

Glen Bell was actually like Plankton from Spongebob, trying to get the secret formula from a popular restaurant chain to become a popular restaurant chain himself

I know all about Mr Bell and his hot dog stand across from Mitla on Mt Vernon and going there to find the secret. I really like Mitle Cafe. We reserved the banquet room for my grandfather's "surprise" retirement party. I don't think he was surprised. That was in the 70's. San Bernardino has a lot of connections in the fast food industry. McDonalds, Taco Bell, Del taco, Naugles, Der Wienerschnitzel. Pup & Taco, Bakers. They knew each other. In the 70's my mother met Mr Naugle at a parents without partners event and went on a date with Mr Naugle. She was not impressed with him and came home early. Years later I was doing meals on wheels and I saw a new client with the last name Naugle and asked her if she was related. "Yes I was married to that cheating SOB." The anger still flowing out of her. Needless to say i did not mention my mother. I moved to the east coast in 2013 and I really miss Bakers and Del Taco. Mr Baker was claustrophobic & didn't like flying so he did not go national. Del taco is 2 hours away. I like their re-fried beans & bean burritos, best of all. Edit ; I was never a fan of In & Out burger. I don't think there is a connection to the others.

my dad LOVES taco bell crunchy beef tacos. I was given a mock recipe for them (About 10 different spices, tomato paste, boullion, lime) and seasoned ground beef for him and impossible ground beef for myself. The only thing I added was diced jalapeno which Ifried into the meat (about 1 per lb). Then I diced up iceberg lettuce, onions, tomato, cilantro and green onion, and lime wedges. I served it on mission brand crunchy taco shells and flour tortillas depending on preference. We all agreed they were the best tacos we had ever eaten. It does take time to measure out the spices by teaspoon and tablespoon and finely chopping up the veggies but the product was well worth it.
