I'm a mortar deck player in Ultimate Champion. Another awesome strategy that has gotten me a ton of wins is placing your mortar in a defensive position in the center, but not completely to the front of the bridge. Your range won't be touching the princess towers, but if they play a card from behind the king tower, once the card walks just past the princess tower the splash damage from the mortar will still hit the tower.

The reason this works so well is that it's very deceiving. It 'looks' like you're simply just placing a slight more aggressive defensive mortar placement, but in actuality it very much will hit the tower at least once, so long as they place a card from the back, and ofc no other cards are on the field. Even Ultimate Champions players get duped by this all the time. Hope this makes sense. Chao!
