Parliament members will debate the Artificial Intelligence Act, which aims to ensure that AI is trustworthy, safe, transparent and respects EU fundamental rights, while supporting innovation and making Europe a leader in the field.

As part of its digital strategy, the EU wants to regulate artificial intelligence to ensure better conditions for the development and use of this innovative technology. AI can bring many benefits, such as better healthcare; safer and cleaner transport; more efficient manufacturing; and cheaper and more sustainable energy.

In April 2021, the European Commission proposed the first EU regulatory framework for AI. It proposes AI systems that can be used in different applications are analysed and classified according to the risk they pose to users. The different risk levels will mean more or less regulation.

The debate takes place on Tuesday 12 March and the vote the following day.

European Parlament is working against the european IT industry every step of the way. How will EU help us get more software companies and not less? how can we stay competitive against the US and Asia? cookie-banners and ai-information-banners won't achieve anything.

While this will certainly have a positive impact where individual freedoms are concerned, it doesn't address any of the existential risks that were mentioned a number of times, if it keeps excluding military applications (I guess the act would have gone no where if they tried to include them)
