UTAH’S MT OLYMPUS.

Tucked in the Wasatch range between Millcreek Canyon and Big Cottonwood Canyon, Mount Olympus is most definitely not one of the highest peaks around. However, it’s extreme rise from the trailhead at the valley floor to its summit at 9,026 feet requires a 4,216 ft rise in elevation. Indeed, the energy needed to reach the summit makes one feel either very mortal or of demigod status.

THWARTED BY ZEUS.

For twenty years my mom has been telling me to go hike Mount Olympus. She hiked it in her younger years and always describes it as a brutal steep hike. Nevertheless, she speaks of the summit with fondness and sense of deep satisfaction for reaching the top.

In 2015 my girlfriend and I set out after work for a summit attempt. We figured, “It’s only a 7.5 mile hike round trip. We can do that pretty fast. We’ll be up and down before it gets dark.” Holy mackerel, it was 4,000 feet of what felt like straight up. The last section is a scramble. We got half way up the scramble and the ominous black cloud we had been watching got closer and closer. The wind picked up and low rumbling thunder made it feel like Zeus himself was seeking to deter us from our summiting efforts. We said, “If it starts raining this is going to be terrible to get down from.” So with the summit about 100 vertical feet away, we turned around choosing safety over a bagged summit. By the time we got to the car we were unsure if we would come back to complete the hike. Our legs were dead, our feet sore, our hands and fingers hiker-sausages, and we had exhausted our water supply well before we reached our car.

CONQUERING THE OLYMPIANS.

By late spring of 2016 the taunting of the unconquered Mount Olympus drew us again to its trailhead. This time my now fiancé and I arrived early on a Saturday morning to a completely packed parking lot. Determined to stay well hydrated we had larger water bladders in our day packs, and plenty of food to sustain the energy we knew we would expend. Up we went. It was just as hard as the first attempt, but this time we knew what we were getting into. Mentally we attacked it with more confidence.

Not only did we summit, but we taunted the mountain back by slinging a hammock between two large pine trees just before the final scramble to the top and had a delightful meal of grapes, sandwiches, carrots, and pretzels.

On our descent from the summit we found the Portal of the Gods. To the untrained eye it may look like any other crevice of rock. But look closely, the slanted pitch of the door, the triangular overhang over the portal, and the flattened dirt leading directly from the base of the stone all scream “doorway of the Greek gods”.

LEGEND OF THE GREEK GODS.

The home of the the twelve Olympian gods is in Greece. However, a little known fact, is that at the foot of one of the cliffs near the summit of the Grecian Mount Olympus is a stone door. That door is also marked with a slanted pitch, and triangular overhang. When knocked on by any of the twelve Olympians (Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hestia, Demeter, Hermes, Aphrodite, Ares, or Hephaestus) the slanted stone slides up revealing the portal that leads directly to Mount Olympus in Utah.

One may ask, “Of all the places in the world why would the Olympians go to Utah?” Excellent question. The Greek gods found the mountains, snow, variety of landscapes, and lakes of utah - all of which are found in such close proximity - created a superb testing and proving ground for their abilities.

Therefore, if you ever find yourself on the high reaches of Mount Olympus take some time to stop and knock three times on the door with a stone. See if the portal opens for you.

WE SEE HERE TRIVIA.

We hiked past this section of rock on our way up and didn't even think to shoot a video here. PS this is on the south flank of the mountain not the north. You walk right by this on the trail. On the way down the lightning bolt idea popped into my head that this was a portal of the Olympians. And so a video was made!

The Door to Olympus is a gateway in time. What better way to hide than in plain sight, at a vibration which exceeds our comprehension. Faster than light.

the gods won't allow mortals to enter because the last time someone tried the hero Belthaon who tamed the Pegasus he tried to fly to Olympus in mythology Zeus threw something at him causing him to fall and die because if it were that easy everyone would go
