I get where youre coming from, but personally i would give MTL an A. They checked ALL of their boxes (add a big left D, add a goal scorer, add a big guy who can score and hit, add a good backup goalie). Also they got i think a good deal with Gally

As an Avs fan, I'm beyond excited. Four years ago, when everyone was hating on Joe Sakic, I stayed quiet. He turned a bad situation into one of the best teams in the NHL. I'm very excited about the Toews trade and Saad as well. I seriously think they're going to win the Cup next year. It's time.

The reason why we traded Domi was because we are stacked for centers, yes he plays winger but he didn’t do good, he’s way better at center. My hypothesis at this point is that contract negotiations weren’t going good and Columbus knew that Montreal didn’t want Domi at center and he might have not re-signed. That’s why we traded him

Joel Edmundson actually had his best year last year offensively and played insane defensively. I watched every Hurricanes game either in person or on tv and there is a reason Hurricanes fans wanted to resign him

i usually like your takes but this ranking is all over the place. A's for Colombus for signing over the hill Koivu and Domi? Edm gets An A for resigning Mike smith, signing Tyler Ennis??? Mtl B- for upgrading wings, and top 4 def+ bu Goalie? Dude, c'mon man... these are crazy.

Stephenson was a absolute beast for us this year, he was 13th in the league with +/- l and was good with discipline in the playoffs and regular season. He's good defensively and he was on pace to have 44 points this season if he was on our team the entire season (we only got him this last december). He often is as high as our 1st line, He is always in the top 9 at least and wouldn't have problems at 2nd line center.

the rangers signed jack Johnson for one reason, our pk is terrible and the penguins were fantastic last year and jack Johnson was part of that success. It makes sense for just one year. Simple as that. It's not a expensive contract whatsoever and I honestly think it was fine.

In my opinon the Habs would deserve an A- / A, I think that Bergevin did a great job with Toffoli, Allen and even the Domi/Anderson trade. And they also drafted really good prospects like Guhle, Tuch and Mycsak. Great video, keep up the good work

Doing the offseason grades is tricky. Two points:

1) For example, with NYI, they got all their value up front in terms of Pageau's production during the playoffs and I imagine if we use his past record as a barometer of his future projection NYI did well for themselves. That said, I agree with you on the other points, namely fixing their cap situation and getting Barzal signed. We will see for them (although the off season is not over by any means).

2) Having an idea of what a team's vision is before you grade them on their draft/free agency plan is important. For example, is a GM trying to build a skilled team or a truculent team? When sizing up a GM's performance measuring it against his objectives would be fair (easier said than done though).

Montreal has too many Left Defenceman and Edmundson might be risky, but I really like the Toffoli signing because we need him on the powerplay because we were in the bottom in power play last year. I think you were right about the b+

Toronto has had a very successful post season imo. Grav, where do you think Thornton will fit in on Toronto?

I will take an A- for the Devils. The grade could improve with the ample salary cap space they have. The Devils could be a player for Laine or be able to pilfer someone from the Lightning.

I really liked the Dadanov signing and was super surprised that he signed with Ottawa. I think if it wasn't for that signing, I'd probably give Ottawa a B-, otherwise I agree with giving them a B+ or an A- at most.
