Customizing a Graphite Thrust Bearing (Throwout Bearing)

preview_player
Показать описание
In this video I'm going to customize a graphite thrust bearing for an oldtimer car. It had previosly installed a regular thrustbearing which unfortunately was too thick. Therefore the car had issues getting the gears in. We're now switching to a new graphite bearing, which are very common in oldtimers. All dimensions are identical except for the lower thickness and the bigger two shafts. I need to turn them down to ø10mm to make them fit into the clutch.
This is a detailed explained video going through all needed steps to get an accurate result.

I hope you like my work and the video.

If you have any questions about the process, machines i'm using or other stuff, just ask me in the comments. I read them all and i try to reply as soon as possible.

Sorry for my bad english, it's not my language. I try my best to improve my technical english.

I love getting to see the in-depth preparation and precision process. We don't get to realise or appreciate this gets done for all components behind the scenes when we watch the main videos. ❤

For the people pleasantly surprised with commentary from M.M on this video, you might not know on Patreon he does vlogs where you hear him speak about progress on current and future projects. If you can afford it it's highly recommended

Your English is impeccable. Thanks for hearing the voice behind the machine..

Great to hear the voice behind the magic. The usual lathe montage makes it look so simple but so much measurement and care goes behind it.

Remarkable precision, an absolute delight to watch such professionalism at work.

Never, every apologize for your English. You speak it perfectly well.

You are always right so I only write about my past experiences. When it comes to graphite bearings vs roller or ball bearings, I have to say there is a reason graphite is part of history, particularly in sports vehicles. Beautiful work as usual.

He should be well pleased with this. Thanks for sharing this, MM. I love watching you machine stuff beyond "I make a new one". I can't get the smile off my face!😁

I've watched many (if not all) of your videos and wondered how you always got exact dimensions when turning parts. now I know! I didn't realize it takes several turns and adjusting the DRO each time. So fascinating to learn :)

I always admire non-native people being so fluent in technical English.

It's great to see the effort needed, even for such a small change. I'm no machinist and while I have a reasonable understanding I'm sure there are enough of us out there that won't have a clue how much work those speed cuts you show take!

Also your voiceovers are brilliant, I get why you don't always do it, but it's a huge help for the more technical videos 😁😁

Wow my mechanic made a new accent!! He sounds almost like an American now… amazing!!

Your video made me realize why there is such great cost difference in requesting different accuracy on milled parts

So a hour long work cut down to a 10 minute video, i know the feeling

It's nice to see just how precise you make parts that are needed. I knew you made quality parts, I just didn't realize the amount of precision that goes into making the part. I know absolutely nothing about mechanical engineering but I do appreciate a job done with perfection.

I love your narrated videos, MM, especially when you show us the "why" of a technique (the zip ties are a perfect example). I'd wager that the custom-turned shafts are more finely tuned than the cradles in which they're seated. Thanks again!

Watching you perform even a basic machining job like this gives me a great deal of pleasure. I admire your skill and talent.

I don't know if you have ever made a video introducing yourself and give some background information and how you acquired your experience that we see in your videos.. You are truly a master of your craft and we love watching perfection.. So anything you can share with us about yourself, we would love to hear.. Thank you MM for taking us along and allowing us to be a part of it.. Take care my friend and God Bless you and your family... Hope all is well in your part of the world...

Very nice turning. A number of lathe owners on YouTube could indeed learn from your high precision techniques. This is how we used to do it at the Rolls Royce Experimental Works when making high precision one-offs, short run or small batch parts for development aero engines during the 1970s. We used similar lathes too. Thank you for sharing.

I love seeing how the CNC controller is set and how you orient it by placing the cutter at a certain position and zeroing it. Very insightful 😊
