Finally! I tried to get this working for HOURS, and finally came across your video. By following your instructions CAREFULLY, I was able to get MAME working in ES. Thank you so much!!

To all who are experiencing MAME launching, then closing and going right back to ES - double check the designation of the ROMS folder in the MAME application (launch MAME, use the menu to select the folder). I had selected the parent folder, not ROMS.

Wow, thanks man. I've been pulling my hair out on this one until I found this video. Why is this the only place that explains how to make mame work on windows version of emulation station!! Unbelievable! anyway, glad I found it and thanks again.

Man, You're genious. You've solve my own problem. Thx a lot. Works better than I supposed. I've been trying 2 days to figure out what's going on with this. I tried to do sth like shortcuts under command line in windows (none of that worked), until with Your help, at last, I've luckily start the game. Best regards.

this method working fine in March of 2021 with MAME64 228. Eazy peasy... first attempt to fire up mame 228 with a rom worked perfectly with these instructions...

I tried so many different methods that got reported to work, which ended up not working for me.

This worked absolutely perfect for what I needed: running mame games through emulation station.

Many thanks!

Thanks! here's a little change for those who are using a portable version:
<system>
<name>mame</name>
<fullname>MAME</fullname>

<extension>.zip</extension>
"%ROM_RAW%"</command>
<platform>arcade</platform>
<theme>mame</theme>
</system>

%HOMEPATH% works when you use the installer or the default user folder

Ignore my prior comment on your other video lol. Google was being dumb and sent me there instead of here. Thanks for uploading this, you're likely the only person to have such concise video tutorial on how to do this! Thanks again! :)

Thanks a lot, that finally fixed my issue... I know it's an old video but damn the information is lackluster on their website.

Thanks, man. I felt quite dumb not figuring out how why Emulationstation wouldn't accept my configuration.

Big help! Thank you! The .cmd file part had me stuck!

Another way to do this (for portable on Windows):
In your .cmd file put the following (not including --):

---

cd %~dp0

mame.exe %1
--
cd - changes directory
%~dp0 - resolves the full name of the folder the .cmd was executed from

%1 - (after .exe in the .cmd file) Carries the "%Rom_Raw%" command from your .cfg file into the cmd-script.

At least in my case - that resolved this in a way that I can use it portably.

BONUS:

I've decided to use the systems\mame\roms for my roms (no need to configure mame directories then)
To not confuse myself I have created a shortcut in .emulationstation\roms\mame called "Put games here (follow shortcut)" that point to: %windir%\explorer.exe "..\..\systems\mame\roms" (make sure that shortcut doesn't start in specific folder to allow for use of relative paths).

I hope this helps some other poor sap out there. Thanks to Droid for all the info that led to the solution I have used in my own setup! Liked and subscribed :)

I got a copy of MAME with over 6000 roms working. But I run a older version on my cocktail. I've noticed the other one some of the sounds are off, so I stick with my older version

Question—this is way more complicated than other tuts on this (others just say to drop the zip file into the proper mame folder). Does this method resolve all the running errors people have?

I removed some non-working roms from my flash drive, but those same roms remain in my Raspberry Pi 4 device. They're still there even after I restart Emulation Station. Why is this? How can I remedy this?
