I think it's a fun turn of events that later after she's gone through the boot camp from hell under Rose and actually starts to bond with the other members of the rescue squad, the demon girl's armor actually gets slimmer and less durable. The reason being that for dark magic users like this, the power of their dark magic is proportionate to the emotional distance they put between themselves and others. As she grows closer to other people, the "armor" that keeps others away slowly fades.

It's a bit on the nose as far as symbolism goes, but I rather like it
