This is good advice. I’m going to my first day as a paraprofessional so I’m nervous. I know my biggest struggle is asking for help or asking for what I need. I’m use to keeping quiet and doing things on my own. It has always been a struggle for me. But with these tips, it makes me feel better

I've been having so much anxiety about my first job as a para so far until I watched this video. I felt like I was asking too many questions for the job, but I this reassures me a lot 😓❤

Hi, Kristen,
Thank you so much for your tips! I just had my 2nd day as a Para and feel a little overwhelmed. I've never worked in a classroom and, like you, so far find the kids easier than the adults. My biggest issue so far is that "sink or swim" feeling. I had a teacher shadow me the 1st day and I've asked questions of the other Paras but much of the time I'm getting partial information. I'm told I need to go talk to "Mary" and then they turn and leave. I don't know who "Mary" is or where I'll find her. Then I might here, "She's in the gym with her kids." I'm thinking "Okay, where's the gym?", but before I can get those words out that person has left on the way to where they need to be. It's wonderful how well supported the children at my school seem to be but I could use more support as a new Para. I feel pretty clueless and ineffective and want to feel more comfortable and confident as soon as possible. I ask a lot of questions but I feel like I'm drowning. I wish there were some Para classes offered by the school district. I would take them in a heartbeat. I've told several of the teachers that I would love to have feedback because I want to learn and would like to avoid making big mistakes where a kid melts down because I handled something awkwardly. I don't have any of my own children so I have no personal experience to draw upon except remembering my own childhood school experiences. I'm 61 now and (thank goodness!!) school seems to be a lot more 'humane' toward the kids than it was in my day. I just feel lost in the weeds. Any tips or encouragement you (or anyone) can offer is much appreciated. Thank you in advance. I really appreciate it.

Thank you for this video. I agree with your tips. I’ve been a paraprofessional for 8 yrs and sometimes we need reminders 😊.

Been so excited for my para position! I am gonna be in SpeEd. I’ve been learning ASL and Spanish and i think it will help with students who have language barriers and hearing disabilities. I think it would help take some stress off the faculty if someone understands students and “speaks their language”. It may help in some circumstances but I want to learn more of how to be a “para” rather than a translator. ❤ thanks for the info and inspo!!!

This is really great information! I’m currently a paraprofessional for 4th and 5th graders. I definitely agree with you on each of these tips!

Thank you so much for all of this advice. I haven't went to school for anything yet, so I'm going based off life experiences. But I start my job as a 1 on 1 paraprofessional in 10 days. Your advice really helps a lot!

I had interview 2 days ago and I don’t have no experience with kids, so I just told them I’m doing this for my psychology major to gain experience and put my abilities to play. And also they told me they don’t do any type of training .. they just put you on the spot and you learn as you go . So I’m kinda scared cause if they hire me I wouldn’t know what to do, my anxiety would probably kick in especially how im an introvert & scared to ask questions at times & speak up. I really need to build my communication skills.

I should be expecting an interview very soon and the hardest part for me is that transition; starting that brand new chapter of my life. Becoming a paraprofessional is a good start for me on my journey within the field, so listening through these tips are gonna help me a lot. Thank you ❤❤❤

I found this video incredibly helpful, I don’t have much experience working with special education kids. I’ve done summer camps and soccer coaching for younger kids (elementary school age) throughout high school, so I’m hoping at least some of that experience can be applied in this setting. Tomorrow, I’m starting my first day as a substitute para and I had a long talk with my sister who actually worked as a para in the same district before she moved elsewhere.

I was having trouble getting my nerves under control because I want to do this and be good at it, but I realize i’m going to make mistakes and that’s okay as long as I learn and do better or take a different approach the next time.

I’m hoping to get a full time para job out of this if it’s something I enjoy…I was told that could be an option if certain schools “like you” enough (and that would be in time the more I sub at certain schools). So…I will see how tomorrow goes!

Thank you for this video and the tips are incredibly helpful for someone like me!

Thank you so much. Love this. I want to be a teacher one day so this is really helping me because I got to study for this role (being a paraprofessional) aka “parapro GACE” so studying that started now. Thank you so much for this video.

Love this video and your channel. Followed you and congrats on getting your own class! I think I'm going to start some content on being a SPED parapro or at my school, Instructional Assistant. I'm having some barriers with me completing my degree and I think I want to document that and share the journey with others.
