A new series of videos for those that are new to fly tying, to accompany my new book, 'fly tying for beginners' out later this year. Here I am showing techniques that may look challenging, but are totally achievable with a little patience and practice. I have slowed down the tying and explain every step in detail. If you are struggling, and have a question, post it in the comments box below, and I will try and help. Good luck!

This is the fly that I just can’t get right. Watched numerous YouTube videos but this technique is straightforward and simpler. Gonna give it a try tomorrow

50 years and I still learned something! Combing the fibers, never new that.

This may be a beginner's pattern but, as always, you do an expert job of tying it, Barry.

I look forward to the book, Barry. I need a textbook for my youth classes. With accompanying video instruction, it will be more palatable to today's kids. Get your grandson addicted!

I think this was the first pattern I ever tied that caught fish for me. Now it's a staple in my fly box. Isn't it cool how well it wraps itself around your hook shank, looking so natural! The ingredients are so simple yet my lizard brain had to continually remind me to just keep it simple. Otherwise it wanted me to make it far more complicated. This pattern and the Hare's ears nymph adds pretty much all you need for nymphs!

Nice BOC. As I learned from Joe Humphreys years ago, “The basic fundamentals practiced to perfection are the advanced techniques”.

Even these "beginner flies" are after all my years of trying what I needed to fish the holy waters of Barry tie so many different flies that I just never used or needed is as relaxing as sipping hot coffee watching the morning mist rise from the Au Sable or any of the many trout waters in the northern mitten.
Best Wishes Barry! 🤠

Thanks. Really careful and neat tying--especially like the extra layer of tail to build the thorax --mine always seem so thin--so Thanks!!

I love this method for the extra bacon on the wing casing. Trying to do this with on a #14 beadhead but am having trouble finding good proportions between body and thorax. My casing always ends up too small or too big. Practice practice.
