This is actually a great plug-in. We tested it next to real 1176 OG and Blue stripes at school and they were extremely similar to the plugin set at 60hz

Most of Waves analog models are expecting a -18db signal to equal unity. That is probably a big chunk of the difference in why your level matching is such a huge issue.

If you want distortion from the plug-in, you need to engage one of the analog buttons which you did not. You're also not using a real UA 1176 compressor. The CLA 76 plug-in was modelled after Chris Lorde Alges specific unit. If you know anything about analog hardware, you'd know that every piece sounds different and changes with age. Not a very accurate comparison for someone that spends most of his time bashing plug-in manufacturers.

You are also using a 1176 Clone so you can't really say you are comparing it to the real thing on this one. I have to argue with you on this one.

The CLA 1176 plugin was modeled after Chris Lord Alge personal Urei 1176 unit . Your stam audio 1176 was not. 2 different models. Until this day all comparisons across youtube against CLA 1176 are pointless since the only unit that could be compared to see the real results is the unit from Chris Lord Alge...unfortunately. Not even another hardware unit called Urei 1176 since not all of them sounds the same due to the difference between aged components. What you doing on this video is trying to match the sound from your unit to the plugin....so that means this video should be called "Matching Stam Audio 1176 to the Waves CLA 1176"

It seems that the Waves plugin's meter is actually a peak meter, while the hardware's is a VU RMS meter, so matching those two is useless.

Btw, to introduce the preamp distortion you need to click on the 50Hz or 60Hz buttons next after the Analog section.

Idea for a next Snake Oil video? Mmm, maybe TDR Kotelnikov, as it's supposed to be one of the most transparent compressors in existence, I wanna know if it sounds transparent to you.

Do 1176's have any low on roll off on the detector? seems like the waves plugin really reacts alot more to low end than the clone unit.. kick drums i usually work with arent as huge as that one so ive not had that issue

Suggested input level for analog emulated VST is -18db.And fo comparison is good to use some VST to match sound level like HOFA blind test its free.

Review the presonus 1176 vst . They are now available with the fat channel xt for all daws outside of studio one. I love it.

The Waves "CLA" I believe means that it was modeled after Chrsl Lord Alge's actual compressors from his studio. I think the plug in is well worth $29. the only real accurate comparison would be to A/B with CLA's actual hardware units. I have a real UREI 1176 and I still use the CLA plugin a lot.
