"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers — loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.

“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”

The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on YouTube. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.

“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”

But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news — the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.

It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.

“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”

With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on YouTube, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do — even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.

While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.

But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks — who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago — the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.

Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king — the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.

I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”

And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”

Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”

It’s probably for the best — the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all — class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

Rachel Maddow would be very proud of you Kyle

There are many Americans who don't like either man. They both deserve to be one-term presidents.

Kyle criticized Bill Maher for calling out Jill Stein voters in the last election. Wonder what he thinks of that now.

Sounds like Biden needs to try harder to attract that 40% of the country that doesn't vote.

The Dems won't allow Marianne Williamson or any outsider of the establishment to become the nominee.
Change won't come easy, especially when we just get in line and vote as we're told. No thanks.

I’d rather lose and keep my integrity than win and sell out.

"I don't know what he's thinking, I would love to ask him" If only Kyle had some kind of platform with which to do this 🤔

6:47 Kyle, the people that vote 3rd party don't give a shit what other people think. People need to understand that neither side was going to get those 3rd party votes.

There was a time when Kyle said that he would vote 3rd party and own it, and he wouldn’t care about perspective. Well looks like Kyle did a 180 and shaming Cornell West for running. Kyle claims he respects Dr. West, but what Kyle said and the tone of voice, is disrespectful. Kyle claims that Dr. West doesn’t have a shot. So tell me, does Marianne Williamson have a shot? Yeah we need RCV, but that shouldn’t stop anybody from voting their conscience. If 3rd parties didn’t have a chance, then it would be Dermocrats vs. the Whigs. Another thing Kyle, how did running JD candidates in the Democratic Party work out? They all turned into establishment corporatists. So instead of claiming that West will take votes away from Biden, maybe you should claim that Biden is taking votes away from West. I was a registered Democrat up until 2020 when they pulled shenanigans to keep the Green Party candate (Howie Hawkins) off the ballot in Pennsylvania, but now I’m a registered independent. The Kyle Kulinski of 8 years ago would be ashamed of today’s Kyle Kulinski. One more thing, the way you addressed Dr. West made you look racist (since you now care how you are perceived).

Kyle speaks of Cornel as if he's a naive child. Maybe there's something he can learn from Cornel's conviction. We don't know what our future holds. Maybe he can't win, maybe he can, stranger things have happened. All I know is Cornel is one inspirational person, the most inspiring person I've heard speak in my lifetime. I'm not trying to put a death nail into something that hasn't even gotten a chance to take off. Let the man try. He barely announced and you're using poll numbers against him. So many people don't even know who he is yet.

Cornell West must stick to his convictions. Giving in to the lesser evil is no choice. As Chris Hedges says, we may lose but we will have tried.

West and any other third party candidate have every right to challenge the Duopoly. Kyle's take on rank choice voting is silly. Does he honestly think that the GOP and DNC will support Ranked Choice voting? The only way we're going to get it is to vote for more 3rd party candidates.

This video just proves to me that Kyle isn't really serious about doing anything that actually helps people. If Dr. West and the Green Party has access to 50 states or enough states to get to 270 then why can't he win? Kyle doesn't believe what he says he believes if he's not willing to disassociate from the Democratic Party when there is a chance another party is electorally viable.

How about politicians do more to get the people that don't vote to participate? Maybe if they actually did SOMETHING for the working class 🤔

Remember that Dr. West's job isn't to convince Kyle; Kyle is a democrat. Dr. West's job is to convince YOU that he's the most principled candidate in the race. It's a slam dunk case.

I'm so irritated with the whole mess that I will not vote for Biden, I will not. No more Blue no matter Who. I think we need to make a statement. I'm for Marianne, but if my only other choice besides Biden or Trump is Cornel than I'm voting for Cornel. If the establishment left is so afraid of Trump winning, they better do something and fast, I'm done!

Yeah i think Kyle is losing it. He isn't even making rational arguments at this point. The Kyle that started this show would hate where it's gone.

What democracy do we have to lose? Superdelegates don't equal democracy.

The Democratic party needs to be reminded that no one owes them their vote. We need voices on the real left to push democrats to where they should be. As it stands right now I will be voting Green Party.

If West's policies are more inline with what the left wants and majority of American people but Biden's does not, then isn't Biden the spoiler? Remember how many times Kyle has said he's about the policy? Him supporting Biden when there's a third party candidate available which vastly supports more of Kyle's policies. Proves that Kyle is NOT about the policy at all.
