Modifying a VW UP! In just 24 hours...

We set out to do as many mods as possible in just one day on this budget VW UP! In homage to our original episode on our Daihatsu Cuore back in 2008, these mods will be cheap and quick, unlike the car which is cheap (and slow)

But this is just the beginning - this car is set to be one of the best projects of the year with many shipments due from overseas...

Name suggestion:
You should call it Carl, after the old man from the movie Up!
He was an old man who was holding out in his simple nice house, while the world around him moved on to sky scrapers and apartments. This is much like the Up with it's basic mechanicals and lack of fancy new gizmos. The boxy shape of the Up is also like Carl's square head hahaha Also it's just a great film and so is the car!

Here in Brazil we have the turbo engine available, its a commom car among young car enthusiasts so we have some of them pretty modified. Its kinda of hard to find one that haven´t been remaped, we have a lot of recipes and kinda of go-to parts to make'em look better too. Really love this little car.

The Up is the successor of the Lupo, but they cut corners so L-up-o just became the Up

If it ever bothers you enough to change it, wheel options can be opened with a set of hubs from a Polo 6R, a fair bit of the running gear is shared, and rear discs can be fitted to the Up also ;)

In europe, VW sells an EV version of the up, the range is only about 200km, but its actually pretty fun to drive because of the instant torque.

Some quick tips from a guy who services and works on these almost daily.
Pull out the entire airbox before removing any screws, just pull the airbox up until loose and push it to the left to get the little plastic piece on the pipe out of the rubber grommet on the valve cover. When you have to remove the ignition coils, run it really nice and warm, it'll make it MUCH easier to pull them out, also get some dielectric grease INSIDE the ignition coil boot. If they're still stuck or if you for whatever reason can't go out and drive it till it's warm, pull the top of the ignition coil off the boot and put an airgun in the the hole of the rubber boot and blow, they should come right out and the coils can just be put back together.

In Brazil we got the turbo version, it's very used as a track car, even the stock ones are pretty quick.
I believe Brazil is a good place to look for parts, surely will be cheaper than UK.

I'd call it "CatchUp (if you can)", 'cause it'll likely get chopped hard by the mira and/or the superturbo.

The 'technology' behind making a 'hot air intake' work is the spreadsheet that someone made at one point showing how much cheaper it was to produce that way

Misha Charoudin has (or had) a well-modified Up on the Nurburgring, but he's in Germany so it's a little easier to get parts for it. The Up is a great car; you won't set any speed records, but it's very chuckable, and as Marty said, a surprising amount of interior space for a modern compact - 4 adults over 6' will fit quite comfortably.
