Full review of the Focusrite VRM box and "virtual reference monitoring" technology that makes is possible to mix and monitor in professional headphones. It models different acoustic rooms and speakers, such as Genelecs and KRKs.

I agree with your review. I bought myself the VRM box a few months ago and in combination with my Sennheiser HD 25-1 II (one of the headphones it was designed and tested for) it's a great package. It really improves your mixing over headphones, although I would not trust on it alone.
My biggest gripe with this product: It could use more virtual speakers systems and especially environments. Hopefully, future software updates will involve different club systems, car setups, concert venues, etc.

vespers channel has probably helped me out the most out of everything on youtube, thank you, good sir ;)

either way you look at it, you're still going to switch from headphones to "Live monitors" as that is practical during a proper mix-down analysis of your tracks for reference details. its sorta like doing the "car test" for the after Mastered product. you want to hear what the monitors cannot let you hear, and visa versa.

no such thing as a one-way solution! you gotta experience the Music from all aspects, including mixing thru the headphones on a regular basis ;)

Cool, thanks Vespers for the review. I recently got the Focusrite Saffire PRO 24 and love it. Did have the option to get the DSP version which has the VRM software with it but said I would wait and see if it was a "gimmick" or not. So based on some reviews and yours will have to look at getting this in the future. Thanks again.

Thanks for the review, Vespers. Def. gonna check out the vrm box soon.

On a sidenote, I wonder why this video didn't show on the subscriber's module. Youtube bug maybe? Anyway, cheers for the video!

I really don't think this is an accurate representation of listening to the monitors in question. But that doesn't matter. What it does is give you the option of frequently switching between different types of monitor, so that you can refresh your ears and identify problems in your mix that happen with certain types of speaker. I think it accurately represents the differences between speakers, rather than the actual speakers themselves. The Auratone setting is particularly useful for your mids.

For some reason with mine, I get a HUGE bass boost. Even on regular MP3s that have already been mixed and mastered. Why is that?

@DJVespers yo bro i'm definitely getting this, but I want to know, Is this a replacement for mixing with the actual monitors, or is this something that is supposed to compliment the monitors that you should already be using to mix you songs?

Hey, I am having this same problem. I have the sarlett 8i6, vrm box (spdif), and pt9. No sound is coming through vrm box when hooked up spdif. Have you figured out the solution to your problem yet, if so can you share it with me? Im trying to get this thing to work. Thanks

iv just bought saffire pro 24 dsp which has built in vrm. I'm guessing its same as this box. Iv found the the sound quality is ALOT worse with the vrm turned on than to just listen to it normally. the kick becomes distorted and crunchy and everything else not as clear. i tried it on all of the settings and can't find one that personally i liked the sound of. so to see if it was just maybe my unfinished productions, i tried playing a proper song through it.. still no happy with the sound quality.

just won't work with different headphones unless you can change the vrm box's response to match your own, doubt they'd cover enough options to do that if they actually do that at all, It can sort of work with its own standard set of headphones made to go with the vrm -box if they get the eq to flatten it's own default cheap headphones response, Should be ok for getting a rough idea when you want to check your mix but wouldn't seriously use for a mix. A good plugin which takes into account all the different top sets of hphones out there would/could do a better job and save the need to waste materials on the hardware, to me this is just a tweaked usb, single hphone interface, useful to a point but not a serious answer to hphone mixing.

Does anyone know if I can use the VRM Box with a Korg Triton Extreme keyboard?
