Lecture 15 Soil Texture
Soil texture refers to the proportion of different particle sizes within a soil. It's a critical aspect of soil science, as it affects water infiltration, aeration, and nutrient availability. The three main components of soil texture are:
1. Sand (coarse particles, 0.05-2 mm in diameter): Provides good drainage, but can lack water-holding capacity.
2. Silt (medium particles, 0.002-0.05 mm in diameter): Balances water-holding capacity and drainage.
3. Clay (fine particles, less than 0.002 mm in diameter): Retains water and nutrients, but can be prone to waterlogging.
Soils are typically classified into four main texture categories:
1. Loam (balanced mix of sand, silt, and clay)
2. Sandy
3. Clayey
4. Silty
