Marlene Dietrich - Final Recording (1990) Age 89

Dietrich's show business career largely ended on 29th September 1975, when she fell from the stage and broke a thigh bone during a performance in Sydney, Australia. The following year, her husband, Rudolf Sieber, died of cancer on 24th June 1976. Dietrich's final on-camera film appearance was a brief appearance in Just a Gigolo (1978), starring David Bowie in which she sang the title song, after this Dietrich became increasingly dependent on painkillers and alcohol and withdrew to her apartment at 12 Avenue Montaigne in Paris. She spent the final 13 years of her life mostly bedridden. On 31st December 1990 she spoke via telephone and you can hear this in the video, this would be the last time the public would ever hear from her again, On 6 May 1992, Dietrich died of kidney failure at her flat in Paris at age 90.

Ich bin nicht mit Marlene Dietrich augewachsen, aber ich fühle mich ihr nahe, als Frau, sie war ganz bei sich, sie hatte scheinbar alles, als ihre Schönheit durch den "Verwüster", das Alter, (Thomas Mann) vergingt, wählte sie die Einsamkeit, das zu wählen zeigt ihre hohe Intelligenz und ihre Zerbrechlichkeit. Danke für diese schöne Stimme, die ich so eindringlich empfinde, dass ich weinen muss.

her voice sounded great, she seems totally sharp and still outstandingly charismatic! its a shame she felt the need to hide away in her old age and life a lonesome life. its the way she wanted it, but i wish she would have felt differently. even though she was ashamed of her looks i am sure she actually looked great for her age. propably even more so without her usual youthening trickery like in this picture.

Marlene Dietrich was a glamorous, fascinating woman and a very good actress. She was also a raging narcissist. I believe everything that Maria Riva wrote about her mother in her fascinating book. It was so good that I read it twice. 😊

I think that somebody snapped that picture without her permission, startling her. All those years trying to hide away, then someone stole her wish, to keep her image as beautiful. Sad irony. All those years wasted in the flash of a moment, in a flash of the camera.
