I prefer to write a script. So we can keep the mat slot instead of destory it :)
import bpy
for mat in bpy.data.materials:
bpy.data.materials.remove(mat )

You actually saved my day: industrial CAD model to clean with gazillion screws, washers, bolts etc.

You can also go to the drop down where there is a picture logo and change it to blender file then drop don the materials then select all of it.

there is another way :) you need to select the .blend file and click shift + delet

And after, FIle, clean up, remove unused ;)

Or, got to view layer tab, click on the image icon and select blender file, go to materials, select first and last on that list with shift pressed and dlt.
