For women with dense breast tissue, standard mammography alone is often unable to detect cancers in their earliest, most treatable stages. But new technology called ABUS - Automated Breast Ultrasound - now makes it possible to see very tiny cancers in dense breast tissue. In this post to HealthConnection.TV, UT Health Northeast radiology expert Dr. Don Wells answers questions about ABUS technology and breast health.

1:20 - Why would this high tech Ultrasound still be seen as a mere adjunct to mammograms, rather than the primary go-to first line of screening for densely breasted women (for whom mammograms are often inaccurate due to dense tissue obscuring potential abnormalities in the images!) It’s as though doctors aren’t even allowed to explore that possibility of some unwritten law threatening punishment for daring to question established mammogram protocol. Some women may also be better off getting MRI’s.
