Minimize the potential side effects of prostate radiation - with Barrigel.

Radiation therapy uses energy beams to destroy and stop the spread of cancer cells. These high-energy beams can reach and negatively affect healthy tissue surrounding the prostate.

Due to its close proximity to the prostate, the rectum is the primary organ at risk for radiation exposure. Risks and side effects of radiation for prostate cancer include bowel problems such as radiation proctitis, rectal swelling, pain, hemorrhoids, and/or diarrhea.

Barrigel rectal spacer can help minimize these side effects by temporarily positioning the rectum away from the prostate, moving the healthy organ out of radiation beam exposure.

Humiliating and painful procedure (compared to a transrectal biopsy), but appears to have minimized side effects from my 45 daily radiation treatments. Not sure though since several men going through radiation at same time did not get spacer gel and did not seem to be suffering side effects that I wasn’t. Better safe than sorry, but the procedure under local anesthesia really sucks - super embarrassing and very painful.
